In 20 years, 3D printing may resemble a Star Trek replicator than just a prototyping device, as Fab @ Home, a planned consumer level 3D printer for $5,000, will not only make models of stuff, but “print” hors d’oeuvres, actual devices (and batteries) and so forth.
But we all know the real purpose for getting a 3D printer will be to print out your Spore creatures and World of Warcraft characters, right?
Under an exclusive deal with Blizzard, Mr. Fries set up a Web site tied to World of Warcraft. Starting this week, players can enter a drawing on the Web site to have their character printed. Over time, players will be able to click a print button and receive the colored plaster-and-plastic figures in the mail. The figurines cost about $100 each.

They’ve been saying the 3d printer for home use is just around the corner for the last 10 years, haven’t they? 5000 dollars is a pretty steep price even for early adopters… I’m excited about it though, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed, who doesn’t want to print out actual things…

Though… I’d hate to imagine how much the ink cartridges cost!

The entire point is that you could fill the container with anything you like.
