Hillier: 90% of Americans Pirating the DS [UPDATE]

In the biggest WTF piece in years, John Hillier of the Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) claims that 90% of all American DS owners use the R4 flashcart to pirate games.

Yes, 90% of the 20,000,000 American DS users are pirates. For those of you bad at math, that’s 18,000,000 pirates running around. Anyone who’s hung around a GameStop and seen the majority of DS owners know that it’s unlikely they even know what an R4 even is.

Where did Hillier get this information? Something tells me he pulled it out from a dark place located somewhere on his person.

(Thanks, DS Fanboy.)

[UPDATE: From Joystiq: Apparently, the Sunday Post misquoted Hillier entirely, reports DS Fanboy. "[Hillier] didn’t quote the Sunday Post on any figures whatsoever,” said a spokesperson for the ELSPA. The unverified 90% figure supposedly comes from an article published by The Straits Times about piracy in Singapore. Go figure.]

    Um, a what?

Ha, I read this article yesterday and had the same confusion, but after talking with friends about it we think what the article was trying to say was that 90% of people who pirate things on DS use a R4 device. Until the article I had no idea what an r4 was… I have a feeling neither do any of the soccer moms who bought a DS for themselves or their kids
