CVG and Capcom on Devil May Cry 4 PS3 Install Time

CVG has a minor shouting match with Capcom regarding the 20+ minute install of Devil May Cry 4 for the Playstation 3 to reduce load times.

Just to be sure, we timed the 5GB install process (which you can’t opt-out of) on our PS3 retail version and it clocked in at 21 minutes, 41 seconds.

After installation, we timed DMC4’s load times to be only one or two seconds shy of those in the 360 counterpart. Hardly worth sitting through 21 minutes of concept art, then.

The problem arises from the fact that while the Blu-Ray player the PlayStation 3 uses has more capacity on its discs, it is also far, far slower than a DVD-9 disc drive (which is also why it’s quieter.)

Capcom community man Chris Kramer fired back:

“Once installed, the PS3 version of the game has near-Super Nintendo speed load times. You’ll be amazed how fast levels load, the virtually instantaneous transition from cut scenes to action and that you’re continuously playing the game.”

CVG scoffed:

We’re a good few hours into both versions and the load times on the PS3 version are a few seconds shorter than the 360 cousin at best. They’re definitely no way near “Super Nintendo speed”.

Like devs pointed out the PS3’s Blu-Ray drive is faster.

Some manufacturer specs of one of the DVD drives used by the XBox 360, relevant to the part underlined above.

    3.3x to 8x (4.125 to 10.8 MB/s) Dual Layer 360 DVD

    vs

    9 MB/s sustained PS3 Blu-Ray

[You're absolutely wrong, and anyone who's dealt with programming can tell you that the Blu-Ray drive is not good for game playing.

Okay, so that’s not fanboyish at all.

I don’t have the game yet (playing through DMC1 and DMC3 right now), but I’ve seen from a lot of other sources that it does, indeed load faster after the install. Granted it is just a load time, and from what I hear on the 360 end, not a terrible one at that.

And, uh, I’ve never had problems with Blu-Ray being “not good for game playing” — last time I checked…the games totally worked.

A few seconds is still an improvement, but not a gameplay feature.

I’m not trying to antagonize you, here, but the sheer bluntness of your statement reeks of ignorance — and everyone can totally see it, so it’s not really worth trying to defend your point.

On a side note, I never thought I’d see the current-gen consoles being compared to the 16-bit era in any way in terms of speed :)
