FIRST TAKE: Sins of a Solar Empire (PC)

Stardock has made a habit of keeping the tradition of old-fashioned space 4X games alive with its Galactic Civilization series, and now has released the hyped Sins of a Solar Empire, promising epic scale, operatic science fiction strategy gaming.

The game indeed is deep - there’s tons of decisions to make, with colony management, research trees, and multiple faction units. The game requires the player to employ some serious planning, even more so that strategizing. The game moves slowly enough that the player won’t know he’s on the path to ruin until it’s too late.

The size and depth of the game is both an asset and an impediment. Even “small 2 player” games are long, slow affairs, and the amount of data and control is not only intimidating, but sometimes obscures the affect of decisions until it is too late to do anything about it.

So far, the overall impression of the game is positive. Watch GameStooge for a review in the near future. Feel free to post about your experiences with the game in the Comment section.
