Thank the Goddess for Google Translate, though even then you get mostly gibberish. Famitsu has just put up a bunch of screen shots of the new Dragon Quest 5. They have also written up a small introduction on the game and some of the unique game-play features. If you’re already familiar with the 5th game then there isn’t anything here you won’t already know. The storyline follows the protagonist through twenty years of his life and sees him getting married and settling down, an interesting game mechanic that isn’t seen much, even in epic RPGs. Also new when the game was first released was the ability for monsters you’ve fought to randomly agree to join your party, before Pokemon was ever released. Mostly though it’s over a dozen new shots of the game from which we can see the overworld map, the battle screen, various city views, and the character menu.
The biggest news to me, not mentioned in the actual article, is that in this remake of the game SquareEnix is not bringing it into the third dimension like they have for Final Fantasy 3 and 4 (coming out later this year). It appears to be a complete re-do of the game, as the graphics are neither those used in the original nor in the PlayStation 2 remake (which was in 3d). Instead they’ve opted for a pseudo-3D world, with an isometric background populated by sprites a la Breath of Fire 3. Note the actual art of famed manga artist, Akira Toriyama, is prominently displayed throughout the game, they appear to be actual scans of his work. As far as I can tell (which isn’t much, I can’t read Japanese) Famitsu either doesn’t know or isn’t telling what extras are being packed into the DS version of the game. Follow the link to see more of this upcoming, never seen in the U.S. RPG from the most popular RPG makers in the world.
(Thanks, Famitsu.)
