Developer Ready at Dawn made big news yesterday with a small announcement on their website: they’ve stopped development for the Sony PSP. The makers of two of the most successful PSP games, Daxter and God of War: Chains of Olympus have sent back their development kits and are looking forward to new and brighter things.
The fine fellows over at Joystiq had some questions after reading the news and called Ready at Dawn’s President, Didier Malenfant, up to ask some questions, and the resulting interview was short but revealed that Ready at Dawn is now working on two original IPs, going in a new direction with an existing IP, focusing on next generation console development, their departure from PSP development did not have anything to do with piracy, and ,finally, the studio might return to PSP development in the future but only to port their games.
Generating your own IP and then making it successful is a risky business, no matter how successful and talented your staff - think Flagship Studios - especially when publishers are looking for solid returns on their investment (read: sequels). We here at GameStooge wish them the best!
(Thanks, Ready at Dawn and Joystiq.)
