Joystiq Looks Back on E3’s Past

Joystiq has a retrospective of each E3’s highlight, starting from the first show in 1995 straight through to the crippled animal it was last year.

1995 saw the memorable Sega blunder by announcing its Saturn at $399, while Sony countered with the $299 price tag of the PlayStation One. The next show featured the even more stunning debut of Super Mario 64, which unto its sold Nintendo 64s, til people found out that’s all that the N64 was good for, especially when that Superturd game arrived 3 years later.

Two years later, an exciting Duke Nukem Forever trailer appeared – and then another one was shown off three years after that.

E3 2000 saw the first public unveiling of the Xbox and Halo, and the next year, the Xbox’s launch lineup debuted; the GameCube also made its first appearance. The very next year, Xbox Live debuted. E3 2003 featured the surprise announcement of the PlayStation Portable, but the very next year, Nintendo answered with the uber-popular DS.

E3 2006 was hysterical, as Sony embarrassed itself by giving the PlayStation 3 a $599 price, and gave lie to the previous year’s obvious prerendered videos. If that weren’t enough, the birthplace of a bunch of internet memes were born, including “real-time weapon switching”, giant crabs, and “attack its weak spot for massive damage.” Another system made its debut, the Nintendo Revolution Wii, which became a huge hit for little kids and old people.

Check out the retrospective for yourself. Any E3’s that resonate in your mind, or is GDC where it’s at?
