Insights into Final Fantasy XIII

The folks over at 1Up were able to get an interview with the producer for Sqaure-Enix’s newest magnum opus, Final Fantasy XIII, Yoshinori Kitase and Shinji Hashimoto, their Senior Vice President of Sales, to ask them a little about the upcoming epic roleplaying game.

The biggest information in this interview is that this partnership with Microsoft is brand new, so much so that development of FFXIII hasn’t yet begun. This is obviously a move that Microsoft is happy about, but it isn’t one that ever would have happened if Sony’s PlayStation 3 was performing better in the West, or if the Wii had the storage capability and hardware to handle it. Another thing to note is that no special features are in the works for either console version; in fact it’s explicitly stated that Sqaure-Enix is going out of their way to make sure the visuals are identical on both systems, which means probably a multi-disc release for the 360, a la Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, to fit in all the FMV and dialogue.

While I’ve been a semi-rabid fan of Final Fantasy since I first played it on my NES, I will freely admit I haven’t paid too much attention to who has behind the helm of each episode. So I don’t know if it’s a big deal that the people working on FFXIII have never worked on a Final Fantasy before. They’ve played them, studied them, and talked to those who have but they haven’t made them. So, much like FFXII we can expect a different experience from this one, though as they mention at the end of the interview, what makes a Final Fantasy a Final Fantasy?
