Kaz: We’re Not Rushing Home, Us: Huh?

This is getting to comic levels. Kaz Hirai, Sony global president, is now stating that it doesn’t matter when Home comes out - the release date isn’t important.

Sony has told MCV that the launch date of PS3 Home ultimately “doesn’t matter” – but predicted that the full service will be available in a “reasonable timeframe”.

Just like the PS2/AOL partnership?

Hirai states:

“I’d much rather make sure we take the time to have a great service rather than rush something into the market – only for consumers to say: ‘This is not enough for me.’ I want to avoid that. If we have the right service, it doesn’t matter when we launch – so long as it’s in a reasonable timeframe. Whether our competitors decide to follow what we’ve done with Home or not follow us, that’s up to them. Given the fact that I’ve delayed the launch of Home twice – for which I’ve apologised – I think I’ve done it for a very good reason, and that’s because I want to bring the very best service possible to consumers around the world. We’re very confident in when we do launch the open Beta service, it’s something that will really resonate with the consumers.”

Arrogance or stupidity? Let us refresh you on what SgtPayback wrote regarding Sony and Home:

Having worked at Sony as a Creative Designer two years ago, it doesn’t surprise me that they have still yet to release Home. While there, I was working on their Station Launcher application which was supposed to be released in late 2006. However, the Launcher app is still only in Beta to this day. The problem for Sony is that they simply aren’t a very good software company and in today’s world of software driven products, they are getting their clocks cleaned by Microsoft. With Microsoft’s price cut on the Xbox 360 and their continuing progress on the software front, Sony can only dream of what “could have been” at this point.

Maybe they’re going to reserve Home for E3 2009.

  1. Derrick Schommer Says:

Probably not arrogance or stupidity, I’m sure he’s chomping at the bit to release this to market.

However, when stuff doesn’t work, is unstable, has design issues, roadmap issues, scaling issues, management issues or whatever the problem(s) are, you really don’t want to release it.

Sony’s had some pretty bad stumble marks and nobody wants to see them do it again. It’s probably better to have the bad news about delay after delay than to hype it and watch it fall down on its face for everyone to laugh at.

His message is what we’d call “spin control.”

Regardless of whether it’s stupidity or arrogance. It is hurting them. Home was announced when the system launched! This round of the War is a lot more competitive than the last, and Sony doesn’t seem to realize it or can’t seem to change…
