New Castlevania to WiiWare?

In a couple of recent interviews, Castlevania head Koji Igarashi has stated his interest in developing for the Wii, specifically through its digital distribution channel, WiiWare. Now, Konami has already made the move, or at least announced it with Gradius Rebirth, and Capcom is already there with Mega Man 9. It appears the Wii is becoming the place for retro themed titles, though Live Arcade isn’t doing bad either with Pacman CE, 1942, Commando 3, Street Fighter 2 Hyper Remix, Ikaruga, Rez, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Mega Man 9 as well.

Igarashi said, “I’m definitely interested in WiiWare and I think it’s one of the areas that 2D can still be very strong at”, which is a good thing because it looks like his next title, Castlevania Judgement, a 3-d fighting game, is going to fail miserably. A Plan B looks like a good idea from here. Strange as it sounds I think Koji is cheering on Konami rival Capcom, hoping Mega Man 9 does well, if only because, “if it is successful that definitely opens up doors for what I can do.”

Konami has been putting this man’s hands in cuffs for years, only allowing him to release the same old game over and over (Aria of Sorrow), and then forcing him to make a fighting game?! If Mega Man does well, maybe it’ll give Koji the leverage he needs to get the money he wants to make something truly great with the Castlevania franchise again - though Order of Ecclesia looks hot.
