At a Microsoft event in Seattle today, Epic Games’ President Mike Capps began discussing Unreal Engine 4, and that it would be ready for the next generation of consoles. That’s next next-gen to you, as in the “Xbox 720″ and the “PlayStation 4″. When will the mythical era of consoles come? Capps is predicting sometime between 2012 and 2018 which just so happens to be the same time Unreal Engine 4 will be ready! Oh, and in an interesting aside the new engine will be made first for consoles and then computers, which tells you where Epic expects PC gaming to be at that time.
I didn’t realize it too so long to create a software backend for 3d gaming, but then I’m not in the business of making software backends for 3d gaming. Let’s hope Epic gets all the bugs out and such before they start selling it to others, unlike Unreal Engine 3. I’m sure Epic doesn’t want more lawsuits on its hands.
