Nintendo Developing Wii 2

Let's call the Wii 2 the 'Revolution'! Yeah, that'll work!In a conversation with Forbes Magazine, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed that their next console, the successor to the popular Wii, is under development.

We are always preparing for the next hardware…We are under development… But the hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games.

That is an interesting admission isn’t it? People don’t want to buy Wiis but they have to play Nintendo games - and I’m not talking about Wii Sports, people buy Nintendo for Mario and Link.

The bigger issue is how Nintendo will deal with consumer expectations. The Wii with the Wiimote control scheme has moved gaming in a different direction, and Iwata doesn’t know how Nintendo can meet those expectations. “If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it’s going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again.”

I can’t say for sure but it seems from the interview that the success of the Wii is just as much a surprise to Nintendo as it was to the rest of us, and they don’t even know how to follow up on it.
