Software Sales ‘Good’ Says Nintendo

Everyone, including us, have continued to jump on the band wagon of “Nintendo consoles sell well, but nobody is buying games.” Turns out, people are buying games, says Nintendo and we totally believe them… (feel the sarcasm?)
They issued a little chart showing just how well their first and third party titles (combined of course) are doing compared to their opponents Microsoft and Sony. Nintendo has said they’re “selling third-party games and they are doing very well, and better than [Nintendo's] competitors.” (joystiq)
How are they doing it? Well, consider how long Wii Play stuck on the top video game list sitting in the top five for months. This hardware game was pushing many sales more than likely because people were buying a Wii controller “with bonus game” not a real game. Look at the accessory sales for Wii controllers and you’ll probably see they aligned very close with the Wii Play product.
The chart shows both first party and third party games, knowing the “success” of games like Red Steel we know the third party titles were a bit weak. Mario Galaxy was a huge title for Nintendo and we’re sure that brought up the scale a large amount as well.
Nobody said they had to sell dozens of games when they can sell one or two really well. How can we report an attach rate of under one game? Consider the amount of Wii consoles in the market, if 50% of gamers bought one game that’s a huge amount of units sold on sheer numbers.
The fact of the matter is this, with a console soaring through millions of sold units with no signs of stopping, you’d assume software would be doing equally as well. If Nintendo had the game sales of the 360 this console would be truly an unstoppable force, instead, it’s just a cute console that sells like it was a newly released iphone.
