News Flash, the Internet is full of whiners and babies! Capcom released the list of achievements for their upcoming retrotastic Mega Man 9 and almost immediately “gamers” started complaining about the difficulty!? Before we go into the details there’s one thing I want to point out to everyone, the definition of achievement: Something accomplished successfully, especially by means of exertion, skill, practice, or perseverance. Achievements aren’t supposed to be easy, so stop bitching and complaining (I’m talking to the folks at 1Up, Joystiq, Kotaku, etc…, who all had the same headline “Megaman 9 is hard! I’m a wimp”). They’re supposed to be!
Check the actual achievement list after the break and my opinion.
- Jitterbug — Clear the game in 60 minutes or less (20 Achievement points)
- Invincible — Clear the game without dying (30 points)
- Almost Invincible — Clear the game without continuing (20 points)
- No Coffee Break — Clear the game without using any Energy or Mystery Tanks (10 points)
- Peacekeeper — Clear the game by defeating the fewest number of enemies possible (20 points)
- Conservationist — Clear the game by using the least amount of Weapon Energy possible (20 points)
- Gamer’s Day — Clear the game five times in one day (20 points)
- Whomp Wily! — Clear the game once (5 points)
- Destroyer — Defeat your 1000th enemy (20 points)
- World Warrior — Defeat every type of enemy (5 points)
- Trusty Sidearm — Defeat the eight Bosses with the Mega Buster (20 points)
- Blue Bomber — Defeat a Boss without getting damaged (10 points)
Is doing any of these difficult? Yes, but none are impossible! In fact before Achievements, before the plethora of consoles and games, this is how I played a game. When I was a child, my parents saw video games as a huge distraction and worse than television; I don’t know how we managed to get a NES out of them. I only got perhaps one or two games a year and so, I played them over and over again. I must have beat Mega Man 1, 2, and 3 dozens of times, making it more difficult for myself each time! So beating a Master Robot with only the buster isn’t that difficult, I’ve beaten 22 of them that way. I can’t use energy tanks? Oh, well I never bothered with them after a while anyway! This game is sounding better and better all the time!
Oh, and if I see you on XBLA and you don’t have all of these? Guess, we know who isn’t a gamer…

REALLY? Whoever doesn’t have all those achievements isn’t a gamer? Yeah, THAT doesn’t sound pretentious at all. Maybe some people out there play games for something other than extreme challenge. Like, I don’t know, FUN?

“Peacekeep” and “Conservationist” sound extremely bad to me. How are you going to tell what the ‘fewest enemies’, or ‘least amount of weapon energy’ is? I hate APs like that, you don’t really have any idea if you are going about it the right way until the end, when you find out if you got it (or not).
Beating the game 5 times in one day? Sorry, but any AP that forces you to do some unhealthy gaming is pretty damn shitty. Sure this ‘may’ take only take 5 hours, but I’d imagine most people it would probably be more like 8. But, I can already see that you could probably ‘trick’ that AP by disconnecting from the net and fooling with the 360’s clock.
The rest of the APs aren’t bad (although the not dying one might be annoying to get).

“Fewest enemies” means only the enemies that must be eliminated (ie. bosses or key enemies).
