EA Passes on Take-Two Acquisition

It’s over folks. Those that where wondering, worried, happy or sad about the bid Electronic Arts was putting towards Take-Two and their properties can be at rest. Electronic Arts has some out and publically stated their backdoor discussions have been terminated and they’re no longer seeking to purchase Take-Two.
They went on record yesterday saying, “while EA continues to have a high regard for Take-Two’s creative teams and products, after careful consideration, including a management presentation and review of other due diligence materials provided by Take-Two… EA has decided not to make a proposal to acquire Take-Two and has terminated discussions with Take-Two.”
This means we won’t see the Grand Theft Auto franchise labeled EA like so many other past hit titles that have come and gone under the EA branding. Fears of the 2K Sports franchise merging with its Electronic Arts competitor is no longer in question and the two have gone their separate ways. In my opinion, this is great news for the gaming industry.
Most gamers want the game industry to thrive and grow, to dominate the entertainment sector of world wide sales and distributions. However, growing at the cost of one or two mega publishers is not our desire as it leads to less competition, more watered down titles and constant “sameness.” We need competition, innovative designs and creative use of current and new technology.
Hopefully this parting doesn’t bring Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard or any other big publishers knocking at Take-Two’s front door.
