NBA 2K9 Freezing Problems [UPDATE 3]

There’s been numerous reports of freezing with the PlayStation 3 version of NBA 2K9 on forums. If you’ve been having that issue, please let us know about it.
We’ll contacted 2K Sports to see if they have any answers for you.
More later on this.
[UPDATE: Xbox 360 owners are starting to report issues with it as well. Both versions are also reporting online lag and framerate issues.]
[UPDATE 2: Judging by the numerous posts here, message boards, including Operation Sports, and from the sheer number of web hits this article is getting, this issue is widespread. We're still tying to get an official statement from 2K Sports. We'll let you know the moment we get it.]

We are aware of freezing issues occurring when going online with both the Xbox 360 and PS3 console and NBA 2K9. This has to do with issues on our server that we are working to correct.
So, it seems the freezing seems to be online-based. If you're having non-online freeze issues, they suggest you email them directly.]

it happens to me every time i exit out of a screen like i was creating a player and the music just stopped…i continued and when i went to play a game it froze on the menu screen going from created player to quick game…

YES! finally i find out there are people having the same problems..i have 2k9 for PS3 and it freezes like crazy. Every time i back out of any type of fantasy draft it freezes while restoring default rosters. i mean every single time! they need to fix this with a patch hopefully soon

I wasn’t even online and my 2k9 froze 2 minutes into the game (PS3). Restarted, same thing happened. Now my PS3 won’t read any discs at all!

haven’t had a problem with freezing however game will either not load or if it does Load I can hear the commentary but just random colors can be seen

Yes, i am having the freezing as well when i go to a ranked game. I’m guessing this is due to all server traffic online due to the release date and everyone trying to play online!

yea, im having the same problem. I finally connected to a ranked game, and then the game dropped and i got the loss. Hopefully the servers will change just like they did for madden and gta. plus i heard when team 2k tourney is done the lobbies will come back

everytime i try and play a game in my association
it freezes and just shows a black screen :@
so frustrating seeing as how i have every 2k game since 2k1
and i was highly anticipating htis and this is the game delivered. everyone with a copy should ship one to 2k and we should get a fixed copy and an additional complimentary 2k game

To All My Ps3 Gamers Being that i had the freezing issues as well and i figured it out ill be the person who tell u wats going wrong go to ya ps3 dash board and where it says game go all the way up to where it says game utility delete everything in that folder its unecessary and thats the reson y ur game keep freezing up that is not games u have save thats just crap thats taking up space on da hardrive once u deleted all the thing out of that turn your game off restart ya game and you should be ready to play it worked for me you try doing it now if it works hit me up at teamguap2007@yahoo.com

This is horrible, I have 2k9 on 360 and it has frozen about ten times, ive only been able to play one game…i like 2k way more than live but if this is the new 2k than I might have to switch

FREEZES FOR ME TOO!!!!!! fuk man.. everytime i sign online, it says “locating a match”, then about a minute later the music will stop, then everything just freezes!!! even the ps3 is unresponsive!!! i cant even press the PS button to quit the game. CMON 2K!!!!! fuk

I cant get a ranked game going on in 2k9!!! I thought it was just me but damn, I get on Live 09 just fine.
P.S. I think 2k9 is better, although Live 09 is great too.

In quick game mode the players wont pick up the ball afer a made basket and it acts like a turnover, everything worked fin yesterday and today they just wont get the ball to inbound it, after i make a basket i can run and grab the ball and score again. Everythign seemed to wotk fine online but quite slow.

ok check this out! I buy nba 2k9 for my xbox and all of a sudden i get my second rings of death on a console i just got back from repair. never had any problems before this game. started freezing and kill my xbox. then i went to trade in the xbox version put the wrap back on lucky they exchanged it for a ps3 version of the game. now i try to play games on my association and it freezing on a black screen. I love NBA but this game has totally ruined my week!

I have it for the 360, and it freezes every time I try to play a player-match (the only kind you can play with your friends since they got rid of lobbies). I have managed to play only 1 online game so far and it lagged so bad a game with four 5 min quarter took over an hour to play. This sucks, and it’s the second time in recent history 2k games has released an inferior product. I don’t know if anyone else played Civilization Revolution, but it had similar issues. The representatives from 2k try to pass this off on us like we don’t have port forwarding enabled or an open nat. This is bull****. I will not be purchasing any more games from 2k. They use to make my favorite sports games, but this is unacceptable releasing obviously unfinished, untested products onto the market then making the consumer wait a month or more for patches to fix the problems that never should have existed if the game was mass produced.

Im having major issues with 2k9 for 360. Im finding that there is major framerate issues with the game and most of the time when i take a show there is a delay, causing my shot timing to be very late. This is a huge issue for me because im very competitive when it comes to NBA 2K9.

I’ve had issues with the game getting stuck (looping after an injury) online and the game freezing offline (when ever I try to do development). It seems that there are various hang-ups throughout the game that will break certain parts of the game if they’re triggered. This game needs a patch in the worst way. Gameplay is top-notch but what’s the point if you can’t actually play?

2k9 sucks! 2k8 was way better.. They dribble funny and the moves are harder to do and less effective. Not to mention the camera lag and the freezing problems. The entire game freezes everytime i attempt to play online.. That’s wack! And why the hell does freethrows lag soo much! Damn somebody at 2ksports has been sleeping!

There is absolutely no excuse for 2K to make a game that is so flawed in their NINTH installment of the series. This isn’t even about the fact that Eddy Curry was shooting 20ft jumpers over me on Hall of Fame Mode or the other things they took out, I’m just pissed.
I wonder if I can still play in the 2K8 lobbies. Now that was a game I could enjoy. Not this NBA Live wannabe.

online is a serious issue. just loaded a game where i was phoenix but had half the roster of san antonio.
glitch in franchise mode made me start again, everytime i would develop a player it would freeze before it loaded. i loaded my game and tried again, this problem continued.
this game is better than live, but that is not saying much. still playing it non stop, but 2k really needs to do some patchwork. ive been on 2k since nba 2k, so i really like these games 10 yrs deep. but really, not having online ready to go on launch date is kinda embarrasing.

I’ve NEVER played a game that loads so
long then freezes in the end!
A. When you play the ranked game, it freezes.
B. When you try to create a game sometimes it freezes.
C. BUG – When playing a quick game, once you or an opponent shoots, they DONT INBOUND THE BALL!
D. I’m sure I haven’t uncovered other problems yet that COULD EVEN DAMAGE MY PS3!!!

2K sports RIPPED ME OFF with this 63 dollar disc i bought with Kevin Garnett on the cover. I bought NBA 2k9 to play online. I hope the NBA takes 2k sports to court for putting the NBA’s name on a game that does not even work. Another strike against the NBA for selling out to a junk company.

My ps3 freezes 99 percent of the time I pick an online ranked quick match. The other 1 percent of the time it says it can’t connect please see online FAQ or 2ksports.com yet there is nothing in the FAQ or on 2ksports.com about this problem. Seriously, every time I try online Team Match Up it freezes. If you wait long enough, and don’t quit right away, i’ve managed to play two games. One game ended up 1 v 1 down from 10, the other 3 v 2 down from ten.
TRY PATIENCE first. If all else fails, lawsuit.

Game is a piece of shit. I haven’t had one succesfull online game as of yet and the game play in general (non online games) is way slower than previous versions. I have to crank the speed up to 100 for it to be at a good pace.

I bought 2k9 on Wednesday and played practice mode for 5 min. I opened the menu and selected “Quick Game” and the game froze, rebooted my PS3 and then it stopped reading all types of media. I called Sony and exchanged my PS3 at the local service center; I played practice mode on the exchanged PS3; selected “Quick Game” and same thing happened again. NBA 2K9 broke 2 PS3s for me. This is ridiculous!!!

This game reminds me of when i was ten years waiting all year for a new bike for christmas and instead i got clothes. its weak they ruined one the greatest games ever. 2k8 may have had its flaws but at least it was fluent and fun!

Can we sue these people. Its a shame they tarnished their good name like this. Their servers sucked bad last year now they suck even worse. The graphics seem a little off and the damn game freezes up our $400 investments. No online makes it all suck bad. I don’t think I’m buying anymore 2k games after this. They made way over $100 million on this game on the first day. This is worse than Enron or the Economic meltdown. They owe us BIG!!!!!

my 2k9 online frooze once but it was online trying to load a ranked game, its really a good game the best ever made but the online goes really slow, somtimes it doesnt even load the user info or list to find a game. and i have hi speed interent super pro the best i never had these problems with 2k8, i understand they added in new features and they are awsome but wtf did they mess with the servers for.

SOLUTION FOR YOU problem. I beleive the problem is not the game itself, but the cheap media that the game is on. I bought the game and is was freezing like mad. i then extracted the data from the game and put it on verbatim media and it works almost flawlessly, there is some troble gettingo nline but i’ve played about 20 games online.– its more a porblem with ther server. so i think 2k was trying to save money and used cheep media to burn this disk, this used to happen all the time with PC games. unfortunately no patch can fix this, but if you computer savy try to extract the iso files and burn it to a verbatim, if your xbox is flashed

2k has released a patch 1.10 i believe. This is supposed to fix the online lag and I think 2k cam, but i wouldn’t know if this is true, because my ps3 freezes everytime i wait for an online ranked match! This is ridiculous man, like I have never been upset with a video game since that ironman piece of crap came out!

Glad I didn’t buy the game for online play. Only bought it yesterday and so far, the 4 games I’ve played offline have been fine. Association mode, fine. At least I know where to go now if there are issues, thanks. There was one knob on here saying too many blocks in the game. What planet are you on? I can’t block a damn shot. And the only time I get blocked is if its a stupid shot anyway.

Game freezes up for me when i try to do development in the Association mode. Was fine the first time but 2nd round of development was a no go. Also it stuttered at times in transition from game view to highlights mid game.

My PS3 is all region (US VErsion), I have NBA 2k8 region 2 from Australia and it works well with my PS3 and a standard TV. Today, I bought NBA 2k9 and it was region 2 (Europe/Australia)and when I played it it says “The disc cannot be played because of the video output” with the standard TV. What happen here guys? can anyone help me with this?

There are framerate issues even playing the computer offline…! (I haven’t tried playing online yet – can’t be bothered if I’m already having troubles playing offline)
I am a huge nba 2K sports fan. This is very disappointing and unacceptable. They should have fixed this problem before getting the game out. If they are unaware of this problem, that means they have serious quality control issues – they should have done enough sample testing on ps3 machines.
Complaints are useless now and I don’t want to dwell on this..I hope they get this fixed soon!

I just updated my 2k9 this morning, 14 Oct., and now whenever a team scores the ball is never taken out of bounds. It’s still live as soon as it comes out of the hoop. Whenever I score, just seconds before the shoot clock expires, if it’s nothing but net it keeps running and I get a shot clock violation. Is anyone experiencing this or is it just me???

My favorite new feature is the 5v5 bball; But i can never play it becuzz its always laggy and never starts! Also avatar thing: i luvv it!
Suggestion to 2K: Bring back that one feature from 2k5 were u could randomize your starting lineup from the all the players in the leauge for offline play. Also get a better SOUNDTraCk! i only herd one tight track on the 2k9; invest a little money in REAL ARTISTS: Can we please get a little wayne with our bball? WTF… I didnt pay $60.00 Tax for a game to freeze and not work. They should do a recall on this. It doesn’t matter if its the 2k Server or whatever. By U.S. Law, we should be able to return this and get our money back and crossover to NBA Live 09 (EA Sports).

Had the game for over a week now and the online is still unplayable. It doesn’t appear that they are close to fixing this, if they even plan to. I’m not a fan of the NBA Live series, but at least their online works.

Lol j/k; Its hard to make a fantastic video game within a year; and thats why most sports series shoot for final developement every 2 years and release copys of thier unfinished product each year. 2k8 and 2k9 are unfinished games disguised as finished product(thats why you didnt see much television advertisement for either) Next year is going to be Big money for them. And then 2k11 will either be them polishing 2k10 or most likely starting from scratch.
Look at 2k7; that was a fantastic game; then the next year they started from scratch with a new engine; new gameplay etc. The graphic details and gameplay and game speed were all terrible! now this year 2k9 was alot better in all of those areas(but not the best they could be!) there are still alot more character details and gameplay animations that could be added to enhance your 2k experience.
Valuable SUGGESTION: Take this game back and get something else(Gears of War 2 for example or whatever suits your fancy and preorder NBA 2k10! Next year expect to see tons and tons of advertising for this game, expect to see the reviews for this game 9 out of 10 on every magazazine cover. It will all be worth it because by then they will have fixed all the problems and tweeked all the features that they planned for after the lauch of 2k7! YOU WILL BE BUYING A FINISHED PRODUCT, AND BY THE LOOKS OF 2K9,(WHICH IS A VERY GOOD GAME EXCEPT FOR ALL THE PROBLEMS) 2K10 WILL BE THE MOTHER OF ALL BASKETBALL GAMES!

I’m having freezing issues on online play for my 360. Offline mode, it has freezing problems when i’m trying to inbound. The ref won’t give me the ball!! i have to waste a timeout and the ref gives me the ball. Dreamcast and PS2 2k games in the past were way more reliable than 2k9.
When 2k9 runs without freezing, its an amazing game so 2k9 developers, FIX IT PLEASE, you guys own the NBA Live series, dont make me move to them

Hello everyone. I was completely fed up with nba 2k9, so I called my credit card company today (Amex), and complained that the product I purchased does not deliver what’s promised. I emailed 2K Sports multiple times with no response. Amex took all this into consideration and gave me a credit for the purchase. They will now be contacting 2K Sports directly on my behalf, claiming consumer fraud.
I advise everyone to do the same and get their money back for a product that does not deliver as promised.

I finally managed to get a Season mode game to work with created players. You have to delete the online settings file on your hard drive, and make sure you are unhooked from Xbox live. Some of the problem seems to related to the auto settings and updates that occur when plugged into Xbox Live…whether you are playing online games or not.
The only problem is, after I rifled through that…it started freezing directly when creating a character, something it hadn’t done before.
In other words, NBA 2K9 will freeze in one place or another…whether online or offline. Not only has 2K refused to acknowledge most of this, but their technical assistance is no longer responding to emails either. I can get a few modes to work when it feels like it, but otherwise this is the most inexcusable issue I’ve ever encountered with a video game.

The PS3 version of the game freezed on me but it wasn’t an online issue. While playing the association in single player. I was playing the Miami Heat and Shawn Marion got injured and the game freezed with the camera on Marion by the bench and I could not continue the game.

Hey guys, wanted to let u know. I spoke with Christian at 2ksports. I made him aware of the problem with the game freezes (black screen) before playing an association mode. He sent it to his tech guys and came back with the answer. It happens any time you play a franchise fantasy draft with the bobcats or thunder, while using drafting a player with a thick body type. Weird right? If you check it out and try it, hes totally right. There will be a patch coming shortly. I hope I was able to make alot of people breathe easier as they know its an issue with there game not the system

IMPORTANT! … i think i found out how to fix the freezing problem. whenever i tried to save my game, usually under the association my game would freeze. it would say it was trying to load from “TEXT NOT FOUND” but at the time i had my hard drive renamed to { Hard Drive } … the game data doesnt read and understand the ” { ” so i renamed it to ordinary text and my xbox was able to read it easily
im not sure about how to fix online freezes… im sry but i just figured this out, so for anyone who has the same problem as me.. try doing this!

just keep your xbox standing up, keep a fan on it, dont keep it near alot of stuff that retaines heat, keep it out in the open and talk to it every once in a while so it knows you care, then maybe it will stop breaking on you…

I can’t get online either. I’m in Austin Tx w/ a 15 mbs wireless connection. No problems getting online w/ any of my other games. I had this same f’ing problem last year with other 2k games, and couldn’t resolve it even after I spent 3 hours messing with my router to enable port forwarding or some ridiculous nonsense that had me jumping through hoops to play a video game. Looks like they just can’t get it together. I am absolutely finished with 2k games – I will NEVER buy another one. I hope you 2k clowns are listening. Weak, weak, weak sauce. SHAME!

I had the same freezing problems as everybody else. When i tried to tell Christian from 2k sports he questioned me on the freezng issue like he did not know already. They are blaming the freezing on online issues but the freezing isnt always online. sometimes it happens when i try to start a quick game against a friend at home. I had to talk to Target for a week before they decided to refund me for the game. 2k did nothing to help. I’m switching back to nba live. 2k is a money grubbing company that decided to forget about the most important thing, the customers. INstead they focused on how much money they could make, not making loyal customers happy. Well they lost one customer for life.

I have ps3 and i figured out a way to get online and enjoy the online gaming feature…Let me know what type of connection you guys have for ex; DSL, CABLE MODEM (NO DIAL UP…Broad brand is required to play online)Wire less Router connections.. I played 58 games in association and went to the western finals. Stupid game kept freezing and BROKE my ps3.

After a update nhl2k9 froze everytime after a shot… Then I found this page and unplugged RJ-45. And I was able to play few minutes before a freeze.
Only freeze before this with this game was in franchise, after I had played 72 games.

Im able to play ONLINE SINGLE, etc…just not TEAMUP which sucks a$$ b’cuz thats the funnest mode IMO!

Mine freezes when I switch between “Choose Teams” too fast. …It also won’t automatically update my Spurs, though it is on “Automatic Update.” The Crawford/Harrington trade went through, but Manu and Tony are back… it would be nice if they “REALLY” were back in the dang game. NBA2k9 is an amazing improvement over the previous installments — but only offline. Online, dozens of issues plague the game. First of all, there are no lobbies, which means you can avoid selecting players who lag or have bad reputations. Secondly, When selecting “Quick Match”, you are 90% of the time presented with an error message saying the game cannot start and to refer to an online manual. Third, if you can get a game started, there is a severe problem with the free-throws. I am pretty much a 100% foul-shooter offline, however online the lag makes it nearly impossible to make a free-throw as you have to have memorized your players shot and release the stick a second before your player shoots the ball. I had a 12 point lead, and because i couldn’t make freethrows all of my possessions led to basically turnovers due to his intentional fouling. Oh, and last point – the 5-0n-5 mode is garbage and has yet to work even ONCE in a playable manner. Offline, you’ll have tons of fun. But I never play A.I. in sports games, so this title has been very disappointing.

Just started to play the game online and i already had problems in downloading a lot of updates and requirements in order to play the game. I was kinda disappointed with those negative remarks that i have just read until I saw that a solution is supposed to come on 3rd of December. First of all: I don’t play online, but I had the same issues with the framerate going slower and slower.
Since the new xbox360 firmware update (today) the game runs max 10 minutes before it freezes. This doesn’t happen “sometimes” – it’s always! so there’s not even a single game in association mode I can finish…

Just got my NBA 2K9 for PS3 Yesterday. Freezed twice within 2 hours of playing. The only thing I did besides play quick exhibition games was download a couple posted rosters. No association or online matches. Before I even could play it first, I downloaded some patch, which I assume was the latest. It obviously didn’t fix the issue. Is another patch coming?

I’ve had NBA 2k9 for PS3 for a few months now, it only froze on me maybe 3 times, i had also made 3 players durring that time, now its been 2 weeks since i playd it and when i go in to make a player now it freezes EVERY singe time i try to change the name, every time, but i can edit the players i’ve already made, and their names just fine, so why cant i make any new players??, anything?

Ya 2k sports seems to be offline on a regular basis. I have it for 360 and there are major issues with team up, lets say it works like 1/10 or 1/20 times. i play on gamebattles and its a constant series of cancelling matches because 2 guys cant play together for whatever reason very annoying 2k seems to do nothign to fix the situation…….

when ever i make a shot or other team does they dont inbound ball but its fine when you play a team in practice there are no flaws.

every time i score the opponent cant inbound the ball and i can just pick up the ball and keep scoring. how to fix this problem

my opponent kept making the game freeze on my free throws so i will miss he won dat way at the end. the whole game we played no freezing den at the end when i win n he will foul me den make the game keep pausin on my shots so i will miss. how the fuc do people do dat shit

My 2k9 use to work fine in the association mode. But now it won’t load when I try to play a game in Association. It works fine with quick mode. Please help~!

my 2k9 stop working when i downloaded the new roster in tried to go back in load the old roster. frist thing it did was freeze, now it what even start it say error has occur on starting the game. what can i do

It happens to me every so often… However, the last time it did it wont read any discs at all! And the screen became completely black (spinning circle on the upper right screen). I had to go to a technician to get it fixed. Somehow my HDD was corrupted and all my files were lost because of the formatting:(
