The Sims 3 Rated Teen by ESRB

It’s no surprise that The Sims 3 has been rated Teen by the ESRB. However, there’s a nifty new feature of the ESRB ratings, and that is many games now come with descriptors of gameplay that explain the rating.
This is a life simulation game in which players can customize and control avatars (Sims) through several stages of life and its daily activities. Players are free to pursue a variety of goals as they observe and attempt to influence and nurture families of Sims. These avatars often interact socially, which can sometimes lead to mild flirtation or more intimate encounters. Players can choose to “try for a baby” or “WooHoo” with another Sim – the later option being available to both heterosexual and same-sex couples. These two actions cause the selected avatars to jump into bed and go under the covers, where they wriggle, giggle, and moan until confetti bursts over the bed. Sims characters need to maintain their health and hygiene and do so by eating, exercising, bathing, and using the toilet, which is depicted by a blurred, pixilated effect and trickling sounds. Avatars can also vomit, emit flatulence, and wet themselves if no toilet is available or offered. As in real life, Sim characters can die of old age; they can also die as a result of neglect or starvation. Certain animations depict the avatars dying in fires, drowning in pools, and getting electrocuted by household appliances.
Those of you who were concerned about it, The Sims 3 will maintain its same-sex sexual intercourse, er, “Woo-Hoo”, and yes, the game is unaffected by Proposition 8 – it will have marriage as well, and unlike West Virginia, gay couples can adopt, and contrary to Rick Warren’s ideology, they are not preying on minors, either.

I think teenage sims should have sex, about gay sex that be ok, it will be the same as sims2 so what’s the problem the sims creators suddenly give you a choice to choose what you want in the game and you guys suddenly are basing it on your believes oh I don’t like teenage pregnancy in the game because it is a teen game or gay marriage, you guys are so f—-ing. If you don’t like same sex marriage/sex your Sims don’t HAVE to do it, YOU control them, that’s the point of the game.
It would be ignorant for Maxis to not include gay marriage and sex as funnily enough, it does happen in real life.. which is why I also think there should be teen sex/pregnancy but eh what can ya do… (get a hack :])

I think its nice that there is same sex couples in the game. Its realistic. That’s the whole point of the game, to simulate life. I don’t get why other people have such a problem with it. If you don’t like it, then don’t do it. I’m a lesbian and I’m proud of it. So all you people who have a problem with homosexuals should F off!!

I really don’t think teenagers should be able to woohoo and get pregnant. Mainly because teenagers are minors. We shouldn’t compare able minded mature adults who have sex with the same gender to underage and adolescents who easily get confused or wrapped up in the moment to not think logically. Teen pregnancy and minors having sex isn’t exactly a positive image to show to people.

There’s nothing wrong with same sex couples. It’s not weird at all. Couples are couples no matter who’s got what. And allowing same sex relations in sims 3 simply shows that the people at maxis are socially aware.
And as for being rated for teens, by the time kids reach their teens, they are already well aware of ‘the facts of life’ so its not as if its a shock to them.

i think its great that maxis has included same sex relationships. my sim has been married to a man, divorced then married to a woman.

Like a few said, YOU’RE the one who control YOUR sims. Just because there can be same sex couples in the game, it doesn’t mean they’re in YOUR game. I find it normal. So if you don’t like it, and you’re gonna start arguing about it, then don’t play it at all and your problem will be solved.

First off, Brylon, if that IS your real name (Though I hope it isn’t, as I can picture you being so much of a wuss if you had such a stupid name), For someone so afraid of new and unconventional ideas, I find it amusing that you just got raped from behind on this issue. I suspect, using my unequivocal logic, that you were raised by close-minded religious parents who filled you full of bible “goodness” before you were young enough to learn reason. Now, instead of taking your religion as a nice little moral lesson, you’ve taken it as a lifestyle that tells you to condemn different ideas. The same kind of thought people used to need if they wanted to survive being capture and have stones thrown out them. Face the facts, however, that this is a modern age. If they wanted it to be realistic sexual preference of the sim would have been assigned without the users consent with a 3% incidence of homosexuality, which is about its rate in all mammal populations…
Letting the player decide was a nice touch… though forcing some bigot to play as a homosexual character might have been funny for me and educational for them…

I think they should make a version of sims for younger children, where you can adopt a kid and so on, but with no sexual theme.

I love the disclaimer at the bottom– “Comments are moderated.” by whom? Hitler?? Allowing hateful epithets disguised as “fa–” is just disgusting. Imagine the outrage if this were a discussion about race and someone used “n—-” in their comments. And hatefully suggesting that Sims 4 will show the gay characters in Hell does nothing but undermine the credibility of your argument. Once again, substitute black for gay, and you have the same type of hateful discourse that defined some of America’s darkest days. Finally our nation is seeing the light– that gays are no different than anybody else. Sodomy laws have been struck down by the Supreme Court… Marriage and gay adoption are allowed in several states… And those rights soon spreading to every state is a foregone conclusion. It won’t be long before we look back on these days of discrimination and hate as a nasty stain on this great country, much in the same way we remember the segregationist south. Those of you who spout hate will be remembered just as we remember the George Wallaces and Strom Thurmonds of our past– utter disgraces who remind us of how far we’ve come. Our culture is advancing more with each day, and you all need to ask yourselves what side of history you want to fall on. Remember that passing down your hateful ideologies to your children is setting them up to be considered radical outcasts in a future that won’t tolerate uneducated relics from America’s less enlightened past.

I do not agree with same sex couples, but I do believe that others do have the right to believe in what they want to. I think that they should make sort of an edited version of the Sims 3 game for younger players or players who want a cleaner game. ‘Woo-hooing’ isn’t exactly something that younger teens need to encounter in a game. Mainly because the mind of a teenager is still being morphed and molded, and encountering such things in a game may make the teenager want to do it, see it being done, so forth. Teen pregnancies is another thing I do not exactly agree with, but as I said earlier, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Teen pregnancies can destroy a life. Imagine, a single, teenage mother, couldn’t finish her high school education, alone in the world with a small child. I will admit that these situations aren’t the most common, but they do happen. Teen pregnancy is something that todays media isn’t exactly helping with. Now, if the situation is reversed, say your the father of the child, you need to help support the baby usually, and that’s too much pressure for a teenager. A teen should be able to hang out with friends, worry about whether they failed or passed yesterdays chemistry test, did they get the right dress/tuxedo for a school dance, so on. Whether or not they can support another human being is something I do not feel should go on this list. What if it’s same sex, you may ask. Well, you don’t have to worry about teen pregnancy, but I feel that you should have a mature, adult relationship before doing such things, not have an adult rated relationship while your a teen. Some of you may laugh while reading this, some might get really angry, but this is my opinion, and as I said, we are all entitled to our opinion.
Oh, and I agree with Achmead, yes, the straights may be bashing the homosexuals, but they are also being ‘bashed’ for expressing their opinion. You all complain about being unfairly judged according to your sexual preferences, or at least which side you agree with, but you do the same.

EA has the right to put whatever in a game that they put in a game, but seriously? Since when does SEX = RATED T? Whatever your beliefs concerning homosexuality and teen sex, I do believe that a higher degree of parental control would be a good addition to this game. The ability to “turn off” homosexuality/teen sex/sex period ( and then lock those decisions) should have been a foregone conclusion, but, alas, it is not.

That is the exact thing that I am seeing with all you freaking Christians on here. And by Christians, I mean anyone whose religion requires them to have a closed mind and say “LALALALALALALA” while covering their ears whenever their religion doesn’t support something that’s being talked about. There’s such a thing as SCIENCE, and while I don’t really understand it (I’m an author) I know enough to confidently say that scientists have proven that homosexuality is natural, caused by a balance of horomones that may have an extra one over here, one less over there, etc. It’s not a frakkin’ choice people. 1. WooHoo is NOT graphic. There is no actual nude images, they just hop under the covers and occasionally a leg or arm pops out. (However, this is changable by an UNOFFICIAL AND ILLEGAL PATCH)
2. TEENS CAN’T WOOHOO. THERE IS NO OPTION FOR IT. THEY CAN’T EVEN GET IN THE SAME BED TOGETHER. (SEE ABOVE BRACKET SPACE-THING)
3. By 2040 there will be, according to scientists, more homosexuals than heterosexuals on Earth.
Oh, and by the way, in case any of you religious nutjob rapists want to say “well youre parents oviousle didnt raise you right” stop right there, because both my parents are Fundamentalist whackjobs like you. They forced me into a catholic school before I was expelled for saying that I supported homosexual rights. Funnily enough, Texas has actually managed to pass a law banning marriage between a man and a woman. They passed a law defining marriage as between a man and a woman, and then said that no one was allowed to create a state identical to it. Marriage between a man and a woman is identical to marriage between a man and a woman. Marriage banned. Of course, when they realized what they did, they scrambled and came up with some excuse about the intent of the law being what mattered.

You have to let your kids have some kind of exposure to the world, otherwise when they grow up and aren’t under your control anymore they will go wild. Think of how an immune system works. Exposure to germs causes immunity to illness. If a kid is kept in too clean of an environment, when they are taken out of that environment they have no protection against disease and are far more likely to fall ill than the kid exposed to moderate amounts of stuff while growing up.

Okay, I just wanted to say that I don’t understand how a topic about a GAME turned into a debate about peoples lifestyles.
Stick to the topic of the GAME. The game doesn’t force you to be gay, and if your children aren’t gay, then they’ll never know about the same-sex woo-hoo.
As for teen pregnancy/woo-hoo, there probably should be an option to take it off considering the rating. But I don’t think it’ll impact their minds that much considering they either already know about “woo-hoo” or they simply won’t know whats going on under those sheets. It’s really as simple as that.
For future reference, can we keep in on the topic of the game. Im sure there’s other places for gay debates.

I think they should make a M rated version where it goes on outside the covers or make it a setting option with a passcode

okay, this is ridiculous. i’m 13 and i love this game, and I’m straight but I have no problem with homosexuality. We’re all just people.
1) judging someone because they are homosexual is like judging someone because they have brown eyes. it’s stupid. they can’t help who they are, they were born that way — CREATED that way, by God, and he loves them that way. three of my cousins are homosexual and are proud christians, and they were helped through the emotional battle by their church and their christian families. i was raised christian and my parents told me that you can’t help who you are, and to accept all different types of people – yeah, such nonsense they filled my head with.
2) IT IS A SIMULATION GAME. people woohoo in real life (though i don’t know anyone who uses that terminology)and they can choose to do it with someone of the same sex. so this should naturally be included in a game that simulates life. duh.
3) newsflash. your sim will not automatically become homosexual/fall in love with a sim of the same sex. in my experiance, you have to tell them who to gain romantic interest in, unless they have the “flirty” trait or whatever. if you don’t want your sims to be gay, don’t involve them in a relationship with a sim of the same sex.

Why do people have a problem with gay relationships in SIMS??? It’s a game! If people are complaining about anything like that in a game, they, no offence, need to get off the computer and get a life… Plus, why on earth is this a problem? In real life, some people really love people of the same sex, as much as a hertosexual person would love another. Actually, it’s estimated that about 1 in 10 people are gay. Ownage…?

It’s not a sin if you don’t believe in it. I just think that those people who are religious enough to rub it in your face need to get over themselves and understand that someone who does not believe, cannot sin.
Sins are simply holy reasons to hate what we have become and what is naturally here.

I agree. Homosexuality is perfectly natural and should thus be included in a game about the natures of life. We gays r out there..sorry christians for poluting your bullshit atmosphere but we exist. Mybparents raised me a Christian and with most Christian morals and I turned out gay..woops..be careful, ur straight sims might pop out a little gay boy. :]

WTF is wrong with people these days? Does it ever say anything in the bible about gay people? No. Honestly, would Jesus ever HATE someone for being gay? No, he forgave prostitutes, murderers, and worse, so why the Hell would he dislike gays? What the hell is wrong with people?

When does the bible ever say anything about gays? God put them on Earth didn’t he? Jesus forgave everyone right? Well think about that religious folks.
