When I first got the 360, I briefly played on SDTV, and didn’t see any real diff between it and the Xbox 1.

Then I got HDTV, and Need for Speed: Most Wanted transformed itself in HD. My jaw dropped.

Visual perception is a very strange thing.

Bringing game consoles into the equation muddies the waters a lot.

As applies to gaming consoles and game resolution on a std-def TV.
Some games done well on std-def don't need hi-def. By the same token, other games can look so much better in hi-def because the devil is in the detail. I.E. Expansive battlefields where seeing detail both near and far is important.

I have now played Mario Kart on both the N64 and Wii. I like the games but if not for memorizing the tracks, I couldn't score well. I attribute my initial lack of success to the std-def graphics of the game. The std-def TV is not the problem.

I've seen and played Halo 3 on both hi-def and std-def TVs and the game plays basicaly the same on both and I don't suffer much game wise on std-def. If I have a choice I would go with hi-def. It's a more lifelike image and there is less eye strain. Kind of like a fresh breath of air.
