COMIC CON 09: Champions Online Vs. DC Universe Online

Two superhero MMOs literally faced each other at Comic Con NY 09’s floor. Now, we face them off here: Champions Online Vs. DC Universe Online.

Company pedigrees: Cryptic Studios Vs. Sony Online Entertainment

Sony Online Entertainment was responsible for the popular Everquest games, but also has several black marks on its record: the Star Wars Galaxies fiasco, The Matrix Online and Vanguard. Cryptic Studios has a far shorter resume, but City of Heroes and City of Villians show that superhero MMOs are in Cryptic’s blood.

Edge: Champions Online

Licensing pedigrees: Champions and Hero Games’ roleplaying system is the best pen-and-paper superhero RPG out there, and Cryptic now owns the license, and can do anything they like with it. But, come on, DC Universe – it has Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and a boatload of bankable superheroes, and you get to beat up Doomsday. How many people know that the premier hero in the Champions universe is Defender?

Edge: DC Universe Online

Platforms: Champions Online will feature Xbox 360 and PC support, with crossplatforming. DC Universe Online will feature PlayStation 3 and PC support, with crossplatforming. Looks like the games will face off on the PC, since each game is exclusive to a console.

Edge: None

Unique features: DC Universe Online won’t have respawning areas. Rather, a hero will be knocked out for a set period of time then get up. Players won’t have to go to some respawn area and trundle all the way back to their “death” spot to revive. Champions Online will have no set classes. Rather, players completely customize their superhero’s skill set. Both features are ones that could be very good or very gamebreaking.

Edge: None

Costumes: Champions Online takes City of Heroes‘ costume customization and simply goes nuts with it, making it more customizable than ever. Want to make a huge gargoyle with horns, wings and a long tail that runs on all fours? Have at it! DC Universe Online has a nice character creation, but it pales in this respect.

Edge: Champions Online

Marketability: In this area, DC Universe Online has the edge. Again, it’s the DC Universe. While City of Heroes players may be more inclined to migrate to Champions Online, DC Universe Online should attract the DC fanbase. (One wonders what the story would have been had Cryptic managed to make it work with Marvel Comics as originally planned.)

Edge: DC Universe Online

Well, it’s a tie, and it’ll be very interesting to see how everything shapes up when both MMOs are out and about.  As mentioned earlier, it won’t be much of a choice for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners, but it will be an agonizing one for PC gamers who are hot to be a superhero. The other question is: will console/PC crossplatform play be a healthy one? Both games are action oriented and designed to be played with a gamepad, even on the PC.

What do you think?

crossplatform play is not confirmed for DCU, but it should be there…

is this crossplatform 100% confirmed on champions?
    i don’t know much about the game. (i only own a ps3)

you mentioned that champions doesn’t feature class, and is instead more customizable. DCU is also very modular in this may.

they’ve only shown a small handful of characters for DCU and they were all very strikingly different looking. now, how dynamic and customizable that will really be has yet to be shown.

  2. Jonah Falcon Says:

It’s being developed for crossplatform play:

    http://ps3.kombo.com/article.php?artid=8289

They’ll probably use Champions Online’s solution: special crossplatform servers.

  3. aussieoioioi Says:

I wonder if the game will be available on blu-ray or just as a downloadable content? We who use the PAL PSN store hopes that it will be blu-ray, or I will end up having to purchase my US PSN card from sites like gaminglue in order to get my game fix up-to-date!

  4. Siege Says:

This is a well researched article and one I am very happy with. Im currently in CO’s corner to give everyone an idea of where I stand. So naturally I want CO to succeed, but I am also gonna give DCUO a try. My thing is mainly about gameplay, while I like customization and bieng next to batman. Gameplay and powerselections are gonna be a big factor for both of these games

  5. Fobok Says:

I’m a PC gamer, and have every intention of buying both games. DCUO has the advantage of the DC Universe and the Station Access (I’m assuming) service, of which I already subscribe. Champions seems like the more customizable game, and far more interesting in that way. No way could I turn down either.

  6. Heartnet Says:

.. Champions Online will sell more copies just since it has chose the more popular console and the makers ( Cryptic ) have more experience in making this type of mmo.. I am in CO’s Favour

  7. palaceman Says:

On the licensing point, I’d rather not be reminded that Superman has nearly 100 more years of experience spanking spandex-covered backsides no matter my level. Admittedly, Defender was a no-name to me ’til a year ago but that will give me a feeling more of ownership in the world, dovetailing with the customization for a greater sense of immersion. So in my humble opinion. Licensing…. Edge: Champions-Online!

  8. Fox-Man Says:

I’d have to say that I am in COs favor DC Universe doesn’t really have as much selection as CO and it has classes ofcourse. CO looks more interesting than DCU but DCU looks better graphical wise or atleast to me. Honestley I don’t really want to fight near other heros who I know are better than me when CO is all about the next coming of a super hero and when it wants you to feel as if YOU are the best. So as I said again CO all the way ( but it would have been awesome if the whole marvel thing with CO worked out)

  9. Kevin Says:

I think there’s one big oversight on the part of this article’s author, Jonah Falcon, and that is in respect to who has the edge in licensing. Sony doesn’t own the DC universe, so you will never be able to “kill” any of the villains in anyone’s rogue gallery. Cryptic can do whatever they want with the Champions universe.

Also, the DC license doesn’t lend itself to MMO’s. Sure, there’s lots of source material, but it’s what happened here when Superman did this and crushed those guys. Cryptic has only about 20 years of source material, but it’s all background information which is much more conducive to open ended storytelling.

I will certainly be getting CO over DC, if not for the previous two reasons, then certainly because DCUO is being produced by Sony, and it has been proven that they can take great source material and ruin it. Just look at SWG. CO will be the superior game.

  10. Jonah Falcon Says:

No one is “killed” in City of Heroes or Champions Online, either. They’re knocked out.

Cryptic OWNS the Champions license now. They can do whatever they like with it.

  11. el chapin Says:

i really dont care, just want to create

  12. Rory Shoe Says:

I believe that CO has the better edge to me i think CO will have so much better everything….sorry to hate on you DC fans but CO is amazing customization and you do what pleases you

And for me i dont want Batman, Superman, or Spiderman or whomever fighting over me while I do fine hes owning the bad guys i want to just straight to the top nd be my own bad-guy-fighting hero

  13. Zeltech Says:

    I play Coh\Cov. I also have Ps3
I love Coh game play because my wife plays with me.we really enjoy the fact that we like to spend almost hours on making our character at the beginning and as we play we can choose what powers/race we want

If DCU does not have these options and are only set to just pick a selected hero to play, then i will have no choice but to go onto Champions Online.
I also love the fact that on CoH we can kill villains.
I will try DCU when it comes out,but if it somehow does not meet those qualifications that we liked from Coh, we may just not get DCU and just go with CO.
I really got PS3 for that game that fell in dead water, i cannot remember the name. But Anyways.
Thats my thoughts on CO and DCU.
    We shall see.

  14. Adam Says:

Both seem to be very good in their own ways, i really like open world pvp in mmos such as dc universe online.
I got a bit dissapointed in COs response to pvp being an arena and you can only be a hero but their customization, graphic style and powers seem just too good to push away

  15. Peterstick Says:

CO is allowing only heros because they want to make an expansion with villains. CoH and CoV proves this

  16. chadjison Says:

Personally, the fact that DCU allows villains from the start is an innovation. I’ve noticed that new online games like these learn from previous games. Many innovations of WoW come directly from EQ. The people who design them do it differently from the start. So a willingness to do it differently is telling and with Cryptic a willingness NOT to do it differently is equally telling. It goes without saying they’ll eventually do a villains expansion, but why not simply state this from the onset its not like everyone aware of CoH/CoV doesn’t know they are capable of doing this approach. They should officially address the issue and if they actually think having villains is bad, why? I liked the idea of a Caper where you could choose to be a villain and help the main villain (in the case of DCU it was Lex Luthor). Why not be able to fight for or alongside the CO npc villains for their capers? Is this too advanced thinking or programming for Cryptic? No, it is actively choosing not to do certain things. If so fine but justify/explain yourself as I am shelling out 110 dollars to choose your game over a game like DCU, so you do owe me an explaination. Once I invest in the game I’ll also invest a lot of time and all that character development. To piss it away later will be dissappointing. I like the idea of playing both villains and heros and that was a big PLUS for DCU. Personally I like Mutants and Masterminds, it a better pen-paper rpg in mine and many roleplayers. So I’m not playing CO cuz Champions it he ‘best’ rpg. I like DCU too, but honestly, Marvel would probably have been my choice. I know a heck of a lot of people probably fall in the category I’m in if they were given such choices.

I’ve only played demo’d versions of CoH at conventions. Heard about the game a lot from real players and ultimately choose not to, as CoH had issues, but CO in doing things like having an open build system rather than classes probably will not be like CoH, and that’s a good thing but in some ways will. I’m willing to try either game for 6 months but why should I buy both games (thus investing the money for both) just to try them. That is why I look at preview/gameplay videos, comments, etc. to help me decide and make a real choice. I’ll be playing on the PC so for me its a real choice.

From the demo/gameplay I have seen thus far I liked the scenerio Caper/Case approach for DCU. I wonder if CO will have something similiar. I liked CO has more movement power types. I think DCU’s street-level game looks a bit more detailed/better than CO from what I’ve seen. I suppose the real way to see the difference would be for them to offer a demo download, and 3 days free play to try it. Thus I can experience character building, feel, etc. The other would be to go to gaming/comic Convention and simply play these games, which is probably what I might do. This way I can see firsthand the real differences and listen to the sales pitch for each. Perhaps the salesman will even dual-pitch me. Earn my money salesman, that’s your job.

  17. Katalyst Says:

Hopefully a bit of insight from a player of the game can help future readers. I just want to start off with I WANTED Champions. I beta tested the game for the PC about a month and a half prior to release. I also played CoX (CoH/CoV) for about 3 years.

Champions costume design is amazing, however you can have the best looking character but if game play flaws it doesn’t matter. My first issue with the game was the classless system. It sounds great in theory but the issue I had with it was it made grouping extremely hard. People put together what they imagine their superhero to have but some people don’t put in necessary abilities for groups; ie buffs, heals. Secondly were the missions. It was an older style to it, at least what I played in the first three areas. A majority of the missions were run and get me X item from X thug and return it to me, or save citizen from plane crash. Problem was powers were so strong you could take a group of enemies by yourself and there was a limited number of spawns in a small area. I read the fix from Cryptic was nerfing certain powers to force groups (I could be mistaken). Pluses to the game are the power choices. If you pick the right powers you can make an incredibly strong character. The zones or playable areas are HUGE, it allowed so much free roaming and I loved it. Also a lot of people shrug off the fact Cryptic doesn’t have heavy hitters and whatnot because it isn’t a huge fan base. Well not necessarily a negative thing. This allows Cryptic free range of design and ideas. Sony will have to go to DC for any subtle change in the story or game. As for platforms, Champions has only released for the PC. They are still in works with Microsoft and being hung out on red tape. If history is any indication (Conan) Microsoft will not allow Champions on the 360. In fact the official site has even taken the 360 off as a playable platform.

As for DCU, well this is just hard because so little is known about the game. It has been in talks to allow cross platforming and there is even rumor floating about that it will be a free to play game. And since Sony owns the PS3 it will be released for both PC and PS3. With the price drop of the PS3 I think you will see an increase of sales for DCU in this respect. Sony does have a long list of shamed games so I don’t know what to expect. The animation seems a bit faulty from the videos. However before anyone jumps down my throat I understand it is still in pre-Alpha testing. I feel nevertheless that the animations can remain as they are if it goes free to play. If your wondering how DCU will play my understanding of it is you will have stances per power choice. Defensive, Offensive, and Support.

I have played about every MMO that has been on the market and tested numerous of those. Graphics and character design don’t matter if game play is flawed. DCU seems to be bringing something new to the table. Being able to do instances and running into other players as a PVP event is an amazing idea. I battle along side of Superman while your trying to help Lex Luthor in the same mission. CoX introduced PVP late into their game and because of that it was terrible. You had unbalanced classes for each side. Villains powers were WAY stronger when it was first released. Even Cryptic stated that you needed to design a game around PVP to make it flourish. The only thing that might help them with that is the classes system.

    Hope this was helpful.

  18. Jared Says:

Well im going with CO because i have played Coh/Cov since the game was old and the graphics were bad the game aloud amazing custmization DCU looks “graphicly” good the storyline on the other hand could have gave you an open and exploration on what your character can do like WoW and CO since the give youa chance to fight boss have Extreme fun with PVP in your class/such custom class i have played WoW the game is fun untill u reach lvl 70-80 but the classes gives you diffrent ways on your character and you dont have a main story line in the game. the it was to bad tht the marvel plan didnt work out but you can still create the characters such as deadpool iron man warmachine punisher with the amazing custmazation in CO but marvel will probley try to sue cryptic as they tryed to sue nc soft in CoX (coh/cov). i saw a comment about the villians in champions online. Villians Will BE at least 95% for an expansion since the original game will give you a perspective as a hero and creating a villian expansion would provide bigger PVP maybe new powers new places new bosses AnD of course New Fun Challenges.doing the creation for an expansion on villians would be a wiser and money maker choice since us counsumers would buy it since us fans would go berserk of it creating millions for the cryptic studios and them creating more games.

  19. Jared Says:

i would like to comment on katalyst yes dcu gives you the oppertunity to fight along side its heroes and do instances but it came out around the same time as Co and since COX was the older game it would be bad with out pvp but it became good when they introduced pvp and the villians being stronger tht is just like the horde in WoW being better at PvP but it all depends on how you play in ever game in all due respect playing alongside the heroes is just playing with npc like how you get to play with clank in rachet and clank and all those other games. co-op gameplay with online people is everything when it comes to MMO
