Square-Enix Explains Eidos Desire

If you listened to Epsiode 110 of Gaming Podcast, you would have heard Derrick, Don and Jennifer pondering why Square-Enix, a Japanese developer/publisher, would have so much interest in Western developer/publisher Eidos; Square’s acquisition of Enix made sense, and Eidos, not so much.
Well, it seems Eidos’ properties are very attractive to Square-Enix, who cited some franchises that it wanted to snag:
In the publisher’s fiscal report, the Japanese giant cites four series under its title of “Major Franchises”: Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Kane and Lynch as well as Hitman.
Square-Enix is also interested in the worldwide development houses under Eidos’ banner, as seen in the image above.
It will be very interesting to see what Square-Enix does with those licenses, especially since Warner Bros., which owns 20% of Eidos, is happy to sell.

It also might have something to do with the fact that western developers have seen a great deal of growth this console round, while Japanese developers have seen shrinking profits or losses. Square Enix has the luxury of being bale to buy the expertise in “western style” development that is sorely needed to revitalize the Japanese scene and help them to compete better with their western rivals.
