RUMOR: New PSP Won’t have UMD Drive?

The rumors concerning the development of Sony’s PSP2 continue to grow and speculation is rampant across the internet. The latest comes directly from the founder of Shiny Entertainment and the mind behind Earthworm Jim, David Perry.

On Mr. Perry’s Twitter feed the following pithy comment appeared:

I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2. And thank goodness, they’ve removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I’m excited!

Does this mean anything? Certainly developers would know about this before the general public or the press, at the same time though I suspect Sony would be forcing people to sign NDAs. It is true that the UMD is a big energy sink for the PSP and with the format dead, its exclusion from the PSP2 makes sense, but then of course that means it won’t be compatible with PSP games. That isn’t too unusual though as Nintendo has removed the GBA slot from the DSi as well.

Have you heard any good rumors concerning the PSP2 let us know?
