GDC 09: Sony Announces Price Drop… of Dev Kit

Ars Technica is reporting that Sony has cut the price of the development kit for the PlayStation 3.

In an effort to increase development for PlayStation 3, Sony today lowered the cost of its PS3 development kit to $2,000, the second price cut the company has made since demo units began shipping to developers in 2005.

While it’s nice for developers to only have to spend $2,000 on a dev kit, it isn’t the devs that Sony has to please. The PS3 remains the most expensive console for consumers, while they continue to try to bleed publishers on downloadable content. It’s the consumers who buy the PS3, and publishers who release games on it. Developers are basically the middle men.
