Iwata to Dille: PS3 Owns Fifth Place

When Sony’s Peter Dille quoted Jack Tretton as saying “Microsoft owns the office, Sony owns the living room and Wii owns the closet, ” you knew it was only a matter of time before someone responded. Not to let the fanbase down, none other than Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata himself came out swinging:
“According to our internal research, 87% of Wii consoles are connected to the largest TV screen in the household, which is set in the centre of the living room. Our consoles are not only out of the closet, they are also in the middle of the house. This shows what kind of our customers are playing Wii, as of January this year.”
If anything, Iwata-san is being overly generous. Nielsen Media, the folks responsible for tracking U.S. television viewership, began tracking video game usage back in 2007. Their latest numbers for 2008/2009 (which had to be corrected and re-relased) showed the Wii as the second most used console in the United States. It just bumped the Xbox 360 to third as of January.
Where did the Playstation 3 place?
That would be 5th – behind “Other”, presumably portable machines since they aren’t otherwise listed, and just above the original Xbox which hasn’t been sold since 2005, and the Gamecube which pretty much evaporated even when it was still technically a current generation machine.
So much for “owning the living room”. The Wii consumed 20.7% of gaming minutes in January. The Xbox 360 18.2% and the PS3 came in at half that… 9% of all gaming minutes in January.
