White Knight Chronicles for PS3 Update

One of the promising upcoming gems in the Playstation 3 line-up is White Knight Chronicles, which was first shown in playable form at the 2008 Tokyo Game Show. WKC immediately grabbed the interest of gamers. It was released in Japan in December, and an announcement for a North American release appeared in January with an expected release date of “Winter 2009″.

Now Sony has posted the above video on the Playstation Blog answering some of the more frequently asked questions about the game:

The Good: Japanese downloadable content will be available. Some of it will be on the disc, some will be downloadable. This was one of the things that bothered American and European players of Phantasy Star Online – all the cool DLC was Japan only. I’m glad to see they’re avoiding that.

The Bad: Why is it taking so darned long? Given the interest from fans you’d think they’d want it out as fast as possible. Apparently there is a TON of voice-over that needs to be re-recorded and while they’re doing it they’re also doing another round of bug-hunting. When asked if there was an option to use the original Japanese language track the response was “We never considered that.”

The Ugly: They are adding voice-chat. Now don’t take this the wrong way, I think voice-chat in an RPG with online elements is a great idea… but because this is a new feature that means new code which means new bugs which goes back to “The Bad” – why is it taking so long? Adding a significant new feature only delays the game further. Hopefully it will be worth the wait. All the new code also complicates cross-region play which is classified in the interview video as “to be determined”.
