Digital Battle is reporting that Turbine’s licensed MMO Lord of the Rings Online is reportedly gaining subscribers as it ages, instead of merging servers like some other less successful MMOs do.
LOTRO producer Aaron Campbell said to VG247 that “If anything, The Lord of the Rings Online is growing. We have no plans to merge servers. And please don’t mention it, it makes me twitch unpleasantly”.
LOTRO is an example of how a well-made, intelligently designed MMO – even one using a popular license – can hold its own in a genre dominated by World of Warcraft, simply by exploiting the features the larger MMO cannot – namely, the Lords of the Ring license. Better yet, the method by which is incorporates it is keenly done. It doesn’t hurt that LOTRO takes what works with WoW (namely, the GUI) and utilizes it well.
The MMO currently is thought to have 500,000 subscribers, which is a healthy enough amount of income to keep the servers chugging away. The game has released an expansion, Mines of Moria, and the game is now available free to purchase online or $9.99 for a boxed copy from the official site.
