Sony Laying Groundwork for PS3 Slim?

The PunchJump blog went around and did an inventory of Playstation 3 bundles at major retailers and found that stock is pretty much dropping across the board on the 160GB bundle with Uncharted and a download voucher for PAIN. It looks like as these units sell out they are not being re-stocked by Sony. Even EBGames.com shows the system as “Currently Not Available Online”. This shouldn’t come as any real news as these software bundled units typically are a limited time offer to begin with, as we saw with the Metal Gear Solid IV bundle or the original bundle wayyyyy back when with Motorstorm.

But it does raise the question of what’s next?

Rumors still abound about the PS3 Slim photos which were leaked from the Chinese manufacturing plant – will that unit join it’s big brother on store shelves? Then there are the two upcoming killer aps for the PS3 expected around the 4th quarter of 2009 – Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and God of War III. Is it unreasonable to assume that we’ll see a version of the PS3 packed with one of those titles?

Right now when it comes to new systems there’s the Uncharted pack at $500 (which appears to be going away), the Advent Children Blu-Ray pack at $400 and the bare-bones PS3 also at $400. There is wiggle room for more SKUs if Sony decides to go that way.

It would be nice to see the PS3 Slim, bare bones, come in at $300, a slim with a larger HD and God of War III for $400 and the last of the original PS3s also at $400. Ditch the $500 price point completely, that just scares people. Of course ot remains to be seen if Sony intends on doing something sensible with their pricing – based on the $250 PSP Go! we really can’t assume anything.
