Engadget and Joystiq are reporting that Sony has given the go-ahead to Foxconn and Pegatron for Playstation 3 Slim production to begin with the first machines shipping in Japan sometime in July.
You can read the badly translated news article from UDN here, which says:
“It is understood that the upcoming Sony PS3 to the new machine is small, the appearance than the previous generation models more light, which Sony will be next year before the new generation game console, PS3 to the last paragraph.”
The idea being that Sony is wanting to capitalize on the “students sitting around doing nothing” market, which would seem to me to be a good market to capitalize on. It doesn’t explain, however, why Sony would have been so quiet about the release at E3 despite the fact that photographs had been released prior to the show, and – presuming this latest rumor is correct – so close to the release of the machine.
No official comment or pricing schedule has been announced.
