The Gaming Buzz on Twitter: July 10

In the past few weeks, it’s been close between World of Warcraft and The Sims 3, both games more or less getting the same number of tweets, and switching between the two top spots. Not so this week, as WoW somehow farms an extra 6,000 tweets to absolutely crush the #2 position. The Sims 3 only lost about 1,000 tweets compared to last week, so its buzz didn’t really weaken. It’s just that WoW managed to get so many more.

Top 10 Tweeted Titles For the Week:

  • 1. World of Warcraft PC 19059
  • 2. The Sims 3 PC 13181
  • 3. Halo 3 Xbox 360 7117
  • 4. Battlefield 1943 Multiplatform 6644
  • 5. Second Life PC 5378
  • 6. Fallout 3 MultiPlatform 5219
  • 7. Call of Duty 4 MultiPlatform 5067
  • 8. Wii Fit Wii 4908
  • 9. Gears of War 2 Xbox 360 4131
  • 10. Fight Night Round 4 MultiPlatform 4003

As we’ve seen before, both titles are far and away ahead of the #3 spot, which was regained by Halo 3 this week with 7,117 tweets.

Besides The Sims 3, two other new releases make the list, Battlefield 1943 and Fight Night Round 4. Battlefield 1943 has only been out for a few days so it’s amazing that it made the weekly chart already. It’s not even a retail title, being only available through Xbox Live and the Playstation Network. Part of the buzz, however, was negative, as people complained about the lack of server support on launch. Gears of War 2 returned, briefly knocked from the Top 10.

Other major titles that have released in the past month fail to make the weekly list completely yet again, notably PROTOTYPE, which had a huge amount of pre-release buzz but now seems to have sunk with barely a ripple. Nobody seems much interested in the Wii Motion Plus attachment which also released last month, but that may change when Wii Sports 2 comes out. Similarly nobody seems to be talking about The Conduit which was supposed to be a big Wii hit and has seen a lot of television ad support.

Starcraft II drops off the charts, after having a bump in tweets around June 30/July 1. I’m not sure what happened there. Lots of traffic then nothing.

Unreleased games are still hot though:

  • 1. Modern Warfare 2 MultiPlatform 3921
  • 2. Aion PC 3495
  • 3. Tales of Monkey Island MultiPlatform 2164
  • 4. Battlefield Heroes PC 1728

Joining more or less the same list as last week is Tales of Monkey Island, which just debuted. Everyone is very excited that Lucasarts is finally coming out with a sequel to the classic Secret of Monkey Island, as well as doing a special edition of that adventure from times past. Tales of Monkey Island is a 5 episode, monthly adventure. The first episode became available on 7/7 for PC and Wii. Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition will be out later this year on PC and Xbox Live Arcade.
