The Gaming Buzz on Twitter: July 17

For the first time since we began tracking video game tweets on what games people are talking about, there is not a domination of the top two titles. Sure, World of Warcraft and The Sims 3 are still the top 2, but Battlefield 1943 almost doubles the number of tweets over last week, jumping up from 6644 to over 10,000 tweets. Right behind it is Modern Warfare 2 at 9,348 – amazing for a game that is still months away.
Joining the list for the first time is Heavy Rain, an upcoming Playstation 3 exclusive. Unfortunately, the buzz has been around the fact that it’s been delayed to 2010. A shame for such a good looking game, but there you go.
The Top 10 Tweeted Titles
- World of Warcraft PC 18896
- The Sims 3 PC 10583
- Battlefield 1943 Multi 10388
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Multi 9348
- Halo 3 Xbox 360 6334
- Second Life PC 5990
- Fallout 3 Multi 4821
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Multi 4722
- Wii Fit Wii 4594
- Heavy Rain PS3 3504
When looking at the top tweeted unreleased games that seems to be a pattern. Nobody had been talking about BioShock 2 until it was also announced as being delayed. For the first time we see buzz about a Guitar Hero game, hopefully that will bode well when GH5 releases in September.
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 9348
- Heavy Rain 3504
- BioShock 2 2190
- Aion 2194
- Guitar Hero 5 2099
In the past month the top Tweeted games look pretty similar to the weekly charts, with higher numbers of course:
- World of Warcraft – 62,277
- The Sims 3 – 53,866
- Halo 3 – 24,340
- Second Life – 20,609
- Fallout 3 – 19,192
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 – 18,933
- Wii Fit – 18,059
- Battlefield 1943 – 17,893
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – 17,657
- Fight Night: Round 4 – 14,217
When it comes to new releases in the past month they don’t seem to have much holding power on Twitter. The Sims 3 does well – though had we checked the past month a week ago, The Sims 3 would have won hands down with 90,000 tweets (due to its release on June 2) Battlefield 1943 came out of nowhere. But other major titles are nowhere to be found. Prototype started off strong then petered out, only getting a total of 6,586 tweets in a month. Since release, The Conduit has had 6,369 Tweets; some games get more than that in a single week! InFamous came out at the end of May and has had a total of just 2,305 Tweets. Not what you’d call overly popular, despite selling just under 400,000 copies.
