The Lund Report: July 2009 NPD

Consoles:

Wii – 252,500
Xbox 360 – 202,900
PS3 – 121,800
PS2 – 108,000

Handheld Consoles:

Nintendo DS – 538,900
PSP – 122,800

Every single hardware platform dropped in numbers from June to July, the Xbox 360 fared the best dropping from 240,600 to 202,900, a loss of 15.67%. The Wii did the worst, dropping from 361,700 to 252,500, a loss of 30.19%. The Playstation 2 and Nintendo DS were close behind at -29.27% and -29.69% respectively. The PSP posted a loss of 24.89% when compared to the month prior.

Year over though (July 2009 compared to July 2008) the numbers are shocking. The Wii is down almost 55% compared to 2008, it sold over half a million units back then. This year they’re lucky to hit a quarter of a million. The PS3 and PSP were hit the hardest after the Wii, losing around 45% of their sales each. The PS2 and DS did fairly well, down 30% and 11% respectively.

The interesting case for year over strength comes from the Xbox 360. Sales this year (202,900) were virtually identical to sales last year (205,000), a loss of just 1.02%.

Despite the dire drop in hardware sales, Nintendo dominates the software charts for July, no doubt due in part to a lack of new releases on other platforms and parents buying games for their kids on Summer vacation. Between the Wii and the DS, Nintendo managed to capture 7 of the top 10 selling software slots in July:

Since the non-Wii titles are all sports games, I think we can consider this a preview of the August chart which will no doubt be dominated by Madden 10 across all platforms.
