Sony: No Backwards Compatibility, Sorry

Those of you who were hoping that the PS3 Slim would mark a return of backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 software, it ain’t gonna happen.
“Backwards compatibility is off the table,” Sony marketing chap John Koller has said. “Now that we’re at a point where we’re three years into the lifecycle of the PS3, there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think [...] that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]… It’s not just like 50 or 60 percent. It’s well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilised their PS2 for a little while and they’re ready to jump into the PlayStation 3.”
The only hope for backwards compatibility was software emulation as the Xbox 360 does, since Sony removed the Emotion chip from the PS3. Let us know what you think.

I’m torn… since before the PS3 launched my mantra has been “Don’t believe it until Sony officially denies it.”
OTOH there’s really no compelling reason to add it. The user base of the PS3 is a fraction of what the PS2 is, anyone who wants to play PS2 games either already has one or can get one for $99.

I still play Xbox titles like KOTOR, Jade Empire, etc.

I think this is the worst idea ever. This is one of the reasons that i am not going to get because it doesn’t have PS2 backwards capabilities, which i love my PS2 but if there new PS3 can play every single PS2 games then i will buy it when i get the money which kinda have a job. First of all i want a PS3 that can play every PS2 Games and Guitar Hero 1,2,3, and rock the 80’s and the Guitar hero controler. I am most likely going to buy a PS3 for christmas. But i do like that they have lowerd there price. It was way to expensive. I like how it has free online. Two days ago i was at target and they only had the PS3 160Gb Uncharted for $500. Thats way too much. First it is way more then a 360 elite. But i do like the PS3 just as much as my PS2,Xbox360 60GB, and WII.
