In a stunning development this morning, it was announced that the Walt Disney Company is buying Marvel Entertainment to the tune of $4 billion. Marvel shareholders will receive $30 cash per share and 0.745 Disney shares in trade. Folks who bought Marvel on Friday are seeing a 30% gain in their investment over the week-end.
This means the house of the mouse gains access to the intellectual property of over 5,000 Marvel characters. So what happens next?
Well, the next Kingdom Hearts game could suddenly get really interesting. Cloud and Wolverine teaming up to take down Cruella DeVille and Doctor Doom?
Ok, yeah, that sounds stupid. But Disney also owns ABC so we could start seeing Marvel properties turn up as live action or animated television shows, which could be interesting. Just as long as they don’t have Spider-Man rescue everyone off the island on Lost.

This was unthinkable in the 70’s… heck, in the 90’s, when Mickey Mouse was still a kiddie kiddie and Marvel was supposed to be badass.

The thing that surprised me the most is that this absolutely came out of nowhere. There had been no rumors of Marvel being sold at all much less to Disney. I don’t know how they managed to keep it a secret.

How will this change what Marvel does? I guess we will see.

Well I just hope that the action in Spiderman does not become overly friendly with the whole Disney theme. Marvel Spiderman comics were meant to be cool and filled with action and not a whole lot of oh Im sorry I wont hit you, here is a spider net like the one you use to see on electric company instead. lol
