Famitsu’s Advertorial Sales

Well, that's one way to sell the Xbox 360 in Japan...Famitsu the magazine isn’t for sale, but it seems large parts of it are available to advertisers. Here in the United States, gamers and journalists have complained – and had the occasional scandal – about how beholden gaming magazines are to the publishers whose games they review.

In Japan it seems to be the status-quo.

MagWeasel breaks down just how much of the magazine’s preview section can be bought by publishers, and while the magazine doesn’t sell the review scores, you can get pretty huge chunks of it:

  • A 9 page add-on to the magazine devoted to up to 4 titles – $70,000
  • A 3 page fold-out with advertorial content – $30,000
  • A two-page spread – $16,000

The last two are reserved for only new games, but still if a publisher was willing to spend they could have 14 full pages devoted to only their games.  In Japan, “advertorials” don’t have to be labeled as such like they have to in the United States, so Japanese readers may not be fully aware of what in the magazine is editorial content and what is paid-for advertising.
