Eurogamer is reporting that Sony has pre-emptively attacked a BBC Watchdog Report that will air detailing PlayStation 3 “Yellow Light of Death” failures, and exhibiting Sony’s refusal to replace them.
In response, Sony has written an enormous six-page document – reprinted exclusively on GamesIndustry.biz – that questions the validity and accuracy of the Watchdog report.
“From the correspondence to date, I have serious concerns as to the accuracy of these allegations and the likely tone of the Watchdog report,” wrote Ray Maguire, MD of Sony UK, in response to Watchdog’s allegations.
“The information that you have provided suggests a fundamental misunderstanding of the technical issues and a mis-characterisation of SCEUK’s Out of Warranty repairs policy.”
While failure rates are debatable, BBC Watchdog’s demonstration of any Sony refusal to replace them is damning, and while Sony can refute it in written press releases, Watchdog can use Damon Wayans’ old standup line, “Yes, but do you have tape?”
There’s a reason Microsoft spent a billion dollars on warranty extension and for the first few years free overnight shipping on defective consoles, Sony.
