Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may have brought a pretty amount of change into Activision Blizzard’s coffers, but they certainly spent a ton to make record sales. It’s a good thing the game has earned $550M in just five days – and it hasn’t stopped earning yet, either – because the Los Angeles Times is reporting:
Call of Duty cost $40 million to $50 million to produce, people close to the project said, about as much as a mid-size film. Including marketing expenses and the cost of producing and distributing discs, the launch budget was $200 million, on par with a summer popcorn movie — and extremely high for a video game.
If a $50M film earned half a billion dollars in just five days, champagne corks would be popping all around Hollywood. Titanic’s record $1.2B took months to generate, one might recall.
