Windows XP Crippled By Latest Update?

The latest update for Windows XP has apparently seriously crippled with Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) problems even in Safe Mode, reports ComputerWorld, as users have been posting complaints on Microsoft’s official forums such as these:

  • tansenroy: “I updated 11 Windows XP updates today and restarted my PC like it asked me to. From then on, Windows cannot restart again! It is stopping at the blue screen with the following message: ‘A problem has been detected and Windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.’”
  • Ghellow: “There is something seriously wrong with the update. I can’t even open in safe mode.”
  • brawfab: “I am not very happy with Microsoft as I got to work this morning to find my helpdesk flooded with messages that the PC has the famous Blue Screen.”
  • moosewalk: “I had to go to work and use my Mac to get online to find out what is going on with the XP updates last night. I am this much closer to switching over to a Mac for good.”

Owners of WinXP netbooks were outraged even more, since they are unable to reinstall WinXP at all – no disc drive to reinstall WinXP with.

Several users posted solutions, but the one laid out by “maxyimus” was marked by a Microsoft support engineer as the way out of the perpetual blue screens. To regain control of their PCs, users were told to boot from their Windows XP installation disc, launch the Recovery Console and enter a series of commands.

Some users have tentatively found the culprit, a security fix labeled “KB977165″, which was supposed to fix an old bug:

MS10-015, one of 13 security updates Microsoft issued Tuesday, patched a 17-year-old kernel bug in all 32-bit versions of Windows. The vulnerability went public three weeks ago when a Google engineer disclosed the bug and posted proof-of-concept attack code.

Let us know if this helps you if you’ve been having serious WinXP problems.

I am having issues after updating XP on my netbook which was bought brand new, doesnt have a disc drive (cos its a netbook) and therefor no install disc since XP was pre-installed…

Its now a £300 piece of useless netbook!! I cant be bothered yet to work out how to fix it as things like this stress me out too much…

I suggest you return to the place you purchased it and have them reinstall XP for you. Since it’s new, they might even just replace it. Then when you update your XP, uncheck KB977165.

Yeah think I will… I can access the Bios screen though, & was thinking if I can get a windows install file onto my bootable USB drive, I could perhaps load it from that…(maybe) but its still in warranty so I could take it back & say it has broken…but lose all my files

Lesson: Back. Up. EVERYTHING. Especially on a mobile device.

If you can access the Bios screen, maybe you CAN attempt to reinstall WinXP.
