Major Nelson’s Xbox Live Account Hacked

Microsoft is dealing with a disturbing breach in security, as Larry Hryb’s – aka Major Nelson – Xbox Live account was severely compromised by a hacker.

Microsoft confirmed to IGN this morning the company will be investigating a possible hack of the account for Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, Xbox Live’s Director of Programming.

A YouTube video surfaced late Sunday night that showed the perpetrator entering Hryb’s account, displaying his personal information, account settings, and friend’s list. Other information, such as Hryb’s public display name and location, were also edited.

Stephen Toulouse, Director of Policy and Enforcement for Xbox LIVE, said Hryb’s account has since been fixed and the matter will be looked into later today.

This puts into question the security of regular user accounts on Live. We’ll stay on top of this story as it develops.

(Thanks, IGN.)

[UPDATE: Kotaku is reporting the situation has been "dealt with". For the offender, thumbscrews or cat o' nine tails? The offender, reported by Ripten, had a serious lisp. Maybe that's what drove the kid to a life of crime.]
