PlayStation 3 owners will finally have disc-free Netflix like their Xbox 360 counterparts. Sony explains it all in the video above.
[UPDATE: Not to be outdone by the announcement of disc-free Netflix streaming on the PS3, Nintendo and Netflix have announced the availability of a Netflix channel available for download starting today.
I have yet to attempt the disc-less versions of the services, although the PS3 version is touting limited 1080p and 5.1 surround support, features which the Wii would seem incapable of offering. - Jordan Lund]

Big news for fans of Netflix streaming… Starting October 18th, Playstation 3 owners will no longer need a special disc for streaming AND some of the content will support 1080p and 5.1 surround sound.
I’ve been playing around with Netflix streaming for a few weeks now, via the PS3, Wii, iPad and Windows 7 netbook. So far, the video quality has been less than stellar. Not bad if you’re, say, stuck in line at the DMV or waiting on a prescription at a hospital, but no match for actual DVD quality in a decent home theater.
Stepping up to 1080p should be a HUGE improvment, but the big question is how much of the content will support that resolution, will it be easy to find and will it stream over every internet connection? Time will tell… 4 days to go!
