REVIEW: NBA 2K11 (PC/360/PS3)

NBA 2K11 is possibly the most undeservedly praised game since Peter Molyneux’s disastrous Black & White. While it isn’t unusual for a sports game to get unearned praise – the Madden series is the most definitive example – but it is shocking that NBA 2K11 would get 90+ review scores from so many sites. This game is simply put, terrible.
Despite not having played the NBA 2K series since 2K9, I’ve always been a huge fan of the series. Personally, the pinnacle of the series was the Dreamcast’s NBA 2K2, which featured some of the best gameplay I’d seen in a b-ball game, and had everything right; even rookies would be called out by their first and last name as if they had their own sound file. The control was smooth and satisfying, even more so than later editions – consider that the DC controller had only one analog stick.
NBA 2K11 couldn’t wear 2K2‘s jockstrap. It is simply a huge mess.
First, we’ll discuss what is good about the game. The game presentation is top notch, especially in terms of the crowd AI. It reacts realistically, never resorting to boos until things really get ugly, and not in terms of the score. They’ll boo when the player or AI continually makes bad decisions, and a rout will only quiet them. In a tight game coming down to the wire, however, the crowd will explode, and gamers with good bass speakers will feel the roof rocking as they chomp and cheer. If it’s the player’s home crowd, nothing will get them more pumped. PC owners will find a truly beautiful game when playing the game on maximum settings, though in all versions, some players and coaches just look bizarre. Yes, I’m looking at you, Andrew Bogut. The “meet the press” portion of My Player in which you have to respond to press questions is actually quite involving; do you answer professionally? Loyally? Selfishly? Sometimes answering professionally, for example, will cause your teammates and/or fan base to dislike you a little more.

And that’s where the good section ends. The rest is simply miserable, and makes people who play the game for a period of time wonder how long reviewers actually spent with the game before giving it a score.
First, the game aspects that are completely broken, starting with passing. CPU defenders are worse than the NCAA defensive backs. They will make impossible steals. They’ll make steals with their back to the ball or leaping from midcourt to the sideline to snare a ball. It doesn’t help that the ball breaks all known laws of physics by travelling slower than a defender, who will run it down from behind. Worse, the player may have their player throw balls right into the chest of a defender, rather than lobbing it or bouncing it.
Part of the problem is that the vaunted AI is all smoke and mirrors which becomes exposed when playing in “My Player” mode, in which the game will control nine of the players. When a gamer plays all five players, the game can hide its deficiencies, but otherwise, you can see the die rolls, and more importantly, when the game cheats.

And oh how it cheats. When playing normally, a gamer might think they’re at least at fault in part. My Player shows that it simply isn’t true – teammates will brick easy shots no matter what the skill level, and the game even has the balls to label its comeback AI cheating as “clutch factor” in the game sliders. Of course, it only applies for the computer. How would you explain the Nets or Raptors coming back from a 18 point deficit against the Jazz or Lakers, hitting 95% of their shots while suddenly every human team player goes cold and hits 15%? There is no defense, there is only Madden-style cheating, with miraculous steals, bad passes, missing wide open bunny shots, and so forth – and this is on the easiest game mode. When on higher levels, the game becomes ridiculously transparent in its cheating.
My Player can be ridiculously frustrating due to this. Being a point guard will be an exercise in futility since assists are artificially denied by either the psychic defenders, the receiving player waiting a few seconds to shoot, or merely bricking open shots. In addition, the player gets penalized for the most ridiculous “teammate” infractions. Is there such a thing as a “bad steal attempt” if it doesn’t result in a penalty or score? Or “bad blocking attempt”? Sometimes the game gets confused over who “your man” is when a player scores – is it the man you’re on? the man you’re assigned to? Sometimes it seems like you’re responsible for three players, even if the said player is a foot taller and an obvious mismatch. Even more howlingly bad is that the game will stick you in the game while injured, and somehow you’re blamed for players easily blowing by you while you hobble around. In one instance, a three point shooting point guard was blamed for “bad shot selection” will trying to hit a wide open three pointer down by five points with 40 seconds left. Guh? Then again, a 46 rated player will get significant minutes for whatever reason, and sometimes be asked to start. You can check out an example of how bad My Player is at times in this video posted by a gamer on YouTube.
“Well,” you may think, “maybe online gameplay will be better, since there’s no AI involved.” You’d be wrong, because the game is near unplayable online due to lag. It’s not obvious lag, either. The game will seem smooth, but it’ll be impossible to steal the ball or hit jumpers. The most creaky of centers will be huge scorers, and Shaquille O’Neal will score 45+ points on a regular basis; anyone who saw him playing with the Cavaliers last year will find this amazingly idiotic.
As for basic gameplay, it’s also a mess. IsoMotion was reportedly dumped back in June, but unfortunately it was returned, and NBA 2K11‘s control system is probably the most arcane and frustrating system one can think of. While it’s commendable that the game takes into play inertia, the effect is more like having human-controlled basketball players playing on an ice rink. Trying to juke and deke to drive to the hoop requires more effort than one normally would need; again, the same moves were made on a single analog stick without needing to resort to “IsoMotion”.

There are problems that should have never escaped QA’s attention. AI players will sometimes hold the ball and stand motionless for 23 seconds before heaving a desperation shot. Sometimes an AI will inbound the ball by rolling it to midcourt, letting it sit there for anyone to grab.AI-controlled teams will change coaches five or six times in a single season. The AI will never get called for a charge, ever. There are graphical glitches such as one now-famous one in which the top halves of all player models will vanish, leaving the game to be played by ten legs in shorts, as seen above.
Another problem is a 2K Sports tradition: bad interface. As is usual for the series, it’s clunky and uninformative. One has to go through several layers just to see the roster and who is injured. The one saving grace of the game is that you can save mid-game and resume later, a feature all sports titles should have.
There is no part of NBA 2K11 that isn’t broken or poorly implemented, and while the game has great first impressions, the more you play, the more you realize the game has more in common with Major League Baseball 2K9 than NBA 2K2. The developer has promised updates to the game, but frankly, this game needs an 18 month development turnaround rather than a yearly update like NHL 2K12, especially when that development time is used to stroke a retired player’s ego rather than make real improvements. As it is, wait before buying until it’s patched to a less annoying version.

all this review is, is another dumb reviewer who is crying because he is bad at the game, learn how to play, how to write a decent article, stop crying because you always make stupid passes that makes it easy for the a.i. to steal
you know why other sites are giving it a high score? it deserves a high score, if every site is giving it 90 , then it is definitely doing some right and who are you, on this site ive never heard of until n4g posted this excuse for an article on here
i trust sites such as ign, a reputable gaming site
how fitting that this site is called gameSTOOGE, just another STOOGE reviewer
[Did he not read that I've been playing the NBA 2K series since the Dreamcast? Accusing me of sucking at it? Yahtzee was told the same thing. - Jonah Falcon.]

I agree with most of your complaints about the My Player mode. It really needs a redesign and for even more issues than ones you mentioned.
However, I find it odd that you didn’t mention anything positive or negative about the Association mode or the Jordan Challenges. It seems that almost every other review mentions both. Perhaps those modes have influence in their review scores. You know considering they are 2 major elements of the game.
Also, why are you blaming QA for these bugs. I guess maybe you jumped straight into “journalism” without learning much about the industry. QA may be responsible for finding bugs, but it is the developer’s to to fix them. It’s a simple thing about the industry that was not actually mentioned in Grandma’s Boy. Remember that the next time you want to blame the minimum wage people who spend hundreds of hours testing the game but get no recognition.
October 18th, 2010 at 1:33 am
Much of the problems do appear in the Association mode. They manifest themselves in the My Player mode most, but the problems of passing, comeback AI, etc, are in the other modes. You don’t see them as clearly because you control ALL of your teammates, but they are there.
Which is worse: QA being lackadaisical at hunting bugs, or QA being thorough with hunting bugs and being ignored to get the game out on a specific release date?
As for “calm down it’s just a game”, you do know this game isn’t free, right?
October 18th, 2010 at 1:54 am
Once again, the problems you mention do not specifically reflect the ASSOCIATION MODE. These are issues which can be found in exhibition games. The Association mode deals with features related to team building. Nothing in your review mentions this. Also, you still have not addressed the Jordan Challenges. Whether your thoughts are positive or negative, you can’t exactly critique the game properly if you don’t talk about all of the game’s features.
As for QA, I highly doubt that multiple testers spending hundreds, if not more, hours testing a game would have missed bugs that you could find on your own. You, like so many others who are ignorant of the game development process, actually blame these guys for the bugs in this game. It’s not a question of who is responsible because the devs are ALWAYS responsible for the game’s quality. Again, put down Grandma’s Boy and get a real job in the industry so you can learn these things.
And yes obviously this game costs money. Which is why you do such a disservice to those who would read your review for info. I mean after all who the hell doesn’t expect there to be issues within a videogame. It’s not advertised as being perfect.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:10 am
Just because the AI is much smarter doesn’t mean that the game is automatically realistic.
Also, ISO dribbling, much like in real life, requires players to be in movement.
Really, all I see is just a disgruntled player who had 10 turnovers in the first half and who’s team average was a 30% field goal percentage. Seriously, maybe your players miss point blank and open shots because it reflects real life? Remember that a 50% field goal percentage in NBA basketball is great.
So I suggest you start adapting so you can figure out what the AI’s weaknesses are then you can rewrite this article.
October 18th, 2010 at 4:53 am
I am a fan of NBA games. it’s true that they have some problems but all of us enjoy playing them. So you shouldn’t come up with critical articles. Enjoy man!
October 18th, 2010 at 8:37 am
I haven’t once hit a single glitch and I can do nothing but love the game. Sure My Player is difficult but everything else shines through as an awesome game and tribute to the best basketball player of all time. So, are you sure you’re playing the same game? If so, please quit trolling with bad review score because you sit in your basement playing video games all the time and don’t even know what a jump-shot is. This review was disgraceful to the video game industry and I hope you quit journalism.
Let me guess, you were gonna give NBA Elite 11 a 4 out of 5.
[Uh huh. Nice strawman there. - Jonah Falcon.]
October 18th, 2010 at 12:00 pm
“Once again, the problems you mention do not specifically reflect the ASSOCIATION MODE.”
Wanna bet?
“Just because the AI is much smarter doesn’t mean that the game is automatically realistic.”
AI? What AI? Watch the video and tell me if there’s any actual AI in that sequence.
October 18th, 2010 at 12:02 pm
lmao @ this review. yeah sounds like someone is just bad at this game. most people i know that played 2k9 and 2k10 dont like this one that much. its because it isnt easy to cheese or play an arcade style. garbage people try to throw the ball down court all the damn time for fast breaks THAT DOESNT WORK ANYMORE so start playing smart and not like ur playing nba live or elite. and if your missing wide open shots even with te momentm against you then you just SUCK. doesnt matter if youve been playing 2k since what every year. i kno people that have been playin since dreamcast days and STILL arent good at the game. face it. your review is based off your skills. and then you say you miss wide open shots on the EASY level lmao yeah man u just trash dude. practice. run plays. use defensive stragety. stop playing like ur at the arcade.
[Another strawman argument claiming that I'm "bad" at NBA 2K11, even though I just mentioned I'd been playing the series since NBA 2K. Fail. - Jonah Falcon]
October 18th, 2010 at 12:07 pm
sounds like ur just garbage man. most people i know that played this game since the dreamcast days dont like it that much cause it isnt easy to cheese anymore. stop throwing the ball down cournt into traffic like a fool. run plays and adjust ur defensive stragety. play smart and not like ur playing nba live or elite. your review is nothin more than a frelection of your skills kid
[Funny how people assume I must be bad at b-ball games and maybe videogames in general, despite the fact I've been gaming for 34 years starting with the Odyssey 2, which is probably twice as long as they've been alive. (chuckle) - Jonah Falcon.]
October 18th, 2010 at 12:27 pm
lol dude i said it doesnt matter how long youve been playin. there are people that have been playing street fighter since the original and STILL suck at it. plain and simple. none of those things about the gameplay in ur article happen to good or skilled players because they play smart. passing isnt bad at all. u cant just throw the dam ball any and everywhere. use icon passing to help you. your frustrated at the game cause these things are happening to you. they happen to YOU because YOU arent good. i dont care how long uve been playing for that doesnt make u a good OR a smart player. u make stupid decisions passin all over the place thinking its gonna work. and when the momentum is against you ur supposed to run good plays to gain some back. any SMART player would kno this thats why the GOOD players do it.
[Uh huh. And what does skill level have to do with anything mentioned in the review? Hence, the strawman argument. - Jonah Falcon]

“Once again, the problems you mention do not specifically reflect the ASSOCIATION MODE.
Wanna bet?”
Sure. Since I am actually correct in stating that your review is inadequate, I WIN! For my prize, I think I’ll request that you actually make an effort to write a complete article.
Even your response mentioned above, does not actually state why you feel you are right.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:06 pm
Dude, NBA 2K11 is a buggy mess. Bad AI, bad gameplay, etc. Everyone drafting the same guy? (laugh)
I’m beginning to think you’re played the game for a whole hour.
October 18th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
Thanks for the informative review. Too many games are being released nowadays with poor QA testing. Most companies are in a rush to get their game out to make money. “We’ll just patch it later is the current trend” 2k10 was a buggy mess, my player was terrible and so were the defensive controls, and it looks like they repeated the same mistakes. Putting Jordan in the game does not make it the best ever. Though most other sites gave Nba 2k11 high scores.
I see a lot of immature fanboys are giving you a hard time because your opinion of the game differs from theirs. Don’t let it get to you. Its their money to waste after all.(Or their parents) I however won’t support any game company that puts out a game that is plagued by bugs and bad AI. I doubt most of these guys even played the game for any real length of time. Playing a handful of games(default difficulty)/playing the demo don’t count.
I’d advise anyone interested in the game to rent it first.
October 18th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
“I’m beginning to think you’re played the game for a whole hour.”
I’m sorry Jonah were you addressing me? If you were, way to go on not responding to anything I mentioned.
“Everyone drafting the same guy?”
- Did you actually see this in the game or did you just reprint this from the link you provided. Once again you prove your inadequacy as a legitimate reviewer.
And realbballfan33, I agree that 2k10 had a tremendous amount of bugs and it was unacceptable. However, you fail to see the fallacy in your own argument. You would put down others as fanboys because you think they did not spend much time playing the game and yet you clearly state that YOU haven’t played the game. As such you are unable to substantiate either claims about the quality of the game.
But back to you Jonah, my issue with your review, is that you haven’t been thorough; thereby, leaving those who are unconcerned with what you critique to still unwittingly purchase the game. I have not disagreed with you that there are issues within this game and some that perhaps may make some people steer clear of purchasing. However, I make a point of airing all of my grievances with you and your mess of a review.
[Uh huh. I'm going to stop responding now. - Jonah Falcon]
October 18th, 2010 at 10:47 pm
Good idea. While you’re at it stop writing half-assed reviews.
October 21st, 2010 at 2:24 pm
Jonah-
As someone who works in the games industry, I am not sure which is more laughable– the fact that your review is clearly out of touch with all of your readers (and the rest of the gaming community), or that half of the comments are from you trying to defend yourself, while insulting many of your readers in the process.
If you ever hope to set your sights a little higher than “GameStooge”, I would recommend learning a bit more about the industry (for instance, not comparing games released a whole decade apart– lots has changed since then, pal), and take a page from the first chapter of journalism 101: write for your readers.
October 21st, 2010 at 2:30 pm
Funny, but if you check the 2K Sports forums and other sports game sites, people who bought the game are upset and angry. Check the online issues article. Hardly “out of touch”. (chuckle)
October 21st, 2010 at 2:59 pm
Again, knowing a little something about the gaming industry could go a long way. Forums are outlets where loud, vocal minorities go to complain. They hardly represent the millions of people who purchase a title.
Go to a forum for any game- be it Halo, COD, Assassin’s Creed, Madden, anything – and you will assuredly find people who are upset.
Your general snide attitude and incessant need to defend yourself should be taken as a clue that you are doing something wrong. Everyone has their own opinion, just don’t expect people to value yours if it sounds, for a lack of a better word, uninformed.
Oh, and I’ll add something really immature and snarky to the end of this. (belly laugh)
October 21st, 2010 at 3:37 pm
Which is why 2K Sports has acknowledged the issues and is getting feedback from those same “whiny” complainers for a huge patch, right?
October 21st, 2010 at 4:03 pm
Oh Jonah, you really got me here. Darn it!
Most every game comes out with a patch. Any game that is worth a damn will come out with a patch, it’s the beauty of consoles now being connected to the internet (I know, I know, things were much better on the Dreamcast). And I like how you quote “whiny” which was a word that I never used. Smart. Like your reviews.
This is a reflection of your gaming knowledge, writing style, and attitude as a “games reviewer.” It’s no small wonder that you do this for free.
Anyway, best of luck to you, good sir. And may you continue your scorch and burn approach to games journalism- I’m sure it will get you far.
October 21st, 2010 at 4:08 pm
Stop acting like the issues with the game are minimal and the patch is just to tweak the game. There are whole sections of the game that need to be overhauled, least of which is online play and My Player.
October 22nd, 2010 at 11:11 pm
I thought your review was pretty accurate. I think I would like My Player a whole lot more though if things like “bad shot selection”, “bad pass attempt”, and “ball hog” were taken out of the game. I am a PG, duh, its my job to control the ball–don’t give me a massive penalty because my teammates feet are glued to the floor and I cant find an opening to pass. Also, bad shot and bad steal just encourage you NOT to shoot and NOT to attempt steals. My Player mode feels more like I’m going to work than it feels fun.
As for all people claiming that you don’t know anything about the industry, and all the other general fan-boy whinisms: you have it spot on. The devs either didn’t do enough testing or they did and just chose to ignore the bugs. This generation of gamers have ruined the gaming industry because they have been tricked into believing that its OK to release a buggy game early under the premise that “nothing is perfect” and that its the job of the gamers’, who paid money for the game, to report bugs so that the dev’s can fix them. I AM a programmer, and work with people in the industry, and occasionally in school this topic comes up. Its so completely absurd, would you buy a car under the same premise? Maybe thats what Toyota did, they released the Prius with a “bad brakes bug” and decided it was up to the owners to beta test their failed brakes for them.
October 23rd, 2010 at 1:27 am
Piracy has something to do with it. I was an external beta tester – those are unheard of now. Used to be that publishers wanted a perfectly sound game because it cost MONEY to send discs through postal mail.
October 23rd, 2010 at 1:44 am
Piracy is partly to blame, but why would a dev want to spend the time and resources to make a game impeccable when people will pay money for junk? Its all part of this new fan-boy, instant gratification market. The only losers in this are the gamers, but most of them are too unaware to even know it. Call me elitist, but games were great before consoles stole the show. Although, I suppose consoles have helped ease the piracy problem.
The other side of the problem is that the gaming industry has become so successful that its success has been part of its demise. There is so much money to be made now that investors are pushing devs to get something on the shelf as quickly as possible before things are polished.
I believe this combination of investor pressure and gamer ignorance has really led the overall finished quality of games to spiral down over the years.
October 23rd, 2010 at 4:35 am
i dont understand the whole three point shooting, i mean my god, ray allen doesnt even have a rating of 90 some but paul peirce does. i know you can edit but that isnt no fun. The rating system is all screwed up in my opinion.
October 23rd, 2010 at 10:21 am
Hopefully, when the NBA season starts and they start updating rosters, it’ll change.
October 23rd, 2010 at 7:56 pm
Down by 4 with 25sec left and I take the ball in as PG. Quick pass under the basket to the center with 17 sec left. Instead of just putting it in, the AI throws it to an open guy on the 3pt line–who misses. Thanks for sealing our fate. We had a legit chance at a tie, but the AI sealed a loss. What a STUPID STUPID play. Take the guaranteed points, not the long shot win–especially when, after moving the ball back outside, its even harder to score that second basket because there will be even less time on the clock.
October 24th, 2010 at 6:58 pm
Philip: Believe it or not, this happens some of the time in the NBA too
.
October 28th, 2010 at 3:21 am
So you think the computer is a cheating bastard, Jonah?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIQ7hr8BJqU
This guy played on HOF settings in my player, it’s also his player’s first draft combine game and he still gets 24 points and 10 assists?
Face the facts, Jonah, just because you are a decades-old game veteran, doesn’t mean that every game should come automatically to you within the first hour. So I suggest that you get rid of your confirmation bias disorder, lower down your pride and learn the game.
October 28th, 2010 at 10:44 am
I don’t give a rat’s ass about some guy using exploits to win. That’s not basketball nor realistic.
October 28th, 2010 at 3:58 pm
Exploits?! Those are not exploits! That video is pure fundamental basketball. Did you even see the video, or is your stubbornness reaching you to new heights already?
October 28th, 2010 at 6:06 pm
you, jonah, are the smartest person every couldnt say it better anybody who disagree is probably garbage
October 28th, 2010 at 9:10 pm
Saw this on google, read the name of this site, saw “stooge,” skipped the review and went straight to comments, saved me 5 minutes of my life.
October 29th, 2010 at 2:39 am
Couldn’t agree more, Spammer.
You should show your potential readership some respect, at the very least, Jonah.
October 30th, 2010 at 9:16 am
i’m 33, had every system u can think of including Dreamcast, played EVERY fighting game there was and am ridiculously good at Street fighter and NBA 2K’s, since dreamcast, the biggest fan of Sega, even when they had NFL 2K’s, and they started dropping the ball when they put Ben Wallace on the cover, which led to the demise of the 2K franchise, the best was the last Iverson cover which was 2K9 i believe? Since Sega sold the 2k franchise and concieded with 2k sports and eliminated the NFl aspect and Virtual Tennis, everything has been GARBAGE. u can ridicule me all u want but the ones that do dont know S*it about video games, just ask your mommy or daddy{for those that have one} for money so u can pre-order some game and try to go to a real school for education because real hard working people dont have parent’s money to pay for a “patch”, b*tches.
October 31st, 2010 at 5:35 pm
You’re right in one thing chief. That you will be ridiculed for making a completely worthless and subjective argument.
November 7th, 2010 at 3:12 am
The hostility of the readers here is amazing. You put forth your opinion, and gave your reasons. Nobody here is paying for you to be “complete” and I imagine most people here know a lot less about the industry than they claim.
I play a lot in “the association”. The computer opponent flat out cheats. I can still mostly beat it, because I’ve got a good team and I’m pretty good at basketball games, but it’s obvious that it’s cheating.
I wish I could share video of losing a 10pt lead in 3 minutes as my team blew 2 dunks and a layup which the other team hit 4 3pt shots from guys who just aren’t good at it. It’s absurd. Or perhaps you’d like to see a clip of Andrew Freaking Bynum running down Tony Parker, full court, from behind, with Parker on a breakaway to record a “block” that sends Parker sprawling with no foul. Simulation my fragrant butt.
If the game is a “simulation” then things from NBA Jam shouldn’t happen regularly. If it’s a simulation, then blowouts should happen when one team is clearly better. I don’t want drama, I want a realistic result. Playing the game with such consummate skill that I can get blowouts DESPITE AI cheating ISNT a simulation -it’s an arcade game.
November 8th, 2010 at 1:18 pm
Admore: The reason why Jonah is getting so much heat here is that most of his opinions on the gameplay reflect more of a frustrated gameplayer than an objective reviewer, and that it is clear that his inability to adapt to the difficulty curve this game presents let it give a lot of weight towards his negative perception of NBA 2k11.
Also, the hostility from the readers is not unprecedented, but should’ve been expected based on Jonah’s first paragraph alone.
November 8th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
” his inability to adapt to the difficulty curve”
I know how to play NBA 2K11 – been playing the series for the last 11 years, which is probably longer than you’ve been alive. I know when a game cheats, too – and everyone knows the game is extremely buggy – including 2K Sports.
November 8th, 2010 at 1:32 pm
It doesn’t matter whether you’ve been playing the NBA 2k series even before 2k was founded. The fact is, the developers themselves said that even veterans of the 2k franchise will have some difficulty initially adjusting to the improved AI.
http://www.operationsports.com/forums/nba-2k/455179-wow-cpu-game-does-cheat.html
Why don’t you other players NBA 2k11′s opinions on the CPU’s cheating?
November 8th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
Stop acting like comeback AI cheating is new.
November 8th, 2010 at 6:18 pm
Just like how NBA teams use the comeback cheating method too huh?
November 8th, 2010 at 6:25 pm
Er, blowouts exist in the NBA, stupid. There should be no reason the Lakers should blow a 30 point lead to the Kings at home, for instance.
November 8th, 2010 at 10:36 pm
and you have blowouts in NBA 2k11 too, Jonah if you know what you’re doing and keep the tight defense on them for all 48 minutes >_>, you sure do like insulting your readers, btw
November 9th, 2010 at 1:57 pm
LOL Jonah.
I come back three weeks later to find that you are STILL fighting with and insulting your readers. You sir, are a genius.
And oh yeah, your podcast is awesome. Keep it up big guy, it’s just games.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:47 pm
NBA2K10 was a bugged piece of garbage designed to favor paint/cheeser play. NBA2K11 is perfect besides a few minor bugs.
Mr. Falcon, My Player mode is a newbie to a game series like NBA2K. You as a long time player should know the Association, Quick Game and Online modes is where the bread and butter is at.
Just consider these two things:
1. Your article is uninformative as others have mentioned. What about Blacktop, Jordan Challenge and Association modes? How do you expect readers to take you seriously with the lackluster effort and a narrowed down list of complaints?
2. My Player is still in it’s BETA form practically, and still not jelled into the series yet. I’m hardly interested in it as a LONG TIME 2K gamer myself. I find it more offensive that there can be press meetings in My Player mode but none in Association mode, where it should be first and foremost.
November 10th, 2010 at 10:57 pm
Beta? In the second game it’s in? (face palm)
November 10th, 2010 at 11:01 pm
Wasn’t it the Kings that had a 35-point deficit comeback against the Bulls, a far more talented team at the time in December 2009.
November 10th, 2010 at 11:02 pm
Hi, how many wins did the Kings have last year?
November 10th, 2010 at 11:05 pm
And Association and Quick games have been there for like since 2k ONE! (just 2k)
Putting your hand on your face can lead to acne breakouts. You must have this article on email alert or something that was a QUICK response. Are you so eager to challenge all your readers. It doesn’t matter if you think you are right, you are wrong to try against us. If you were employed to write this article I would have fired you and sued you as well.
I’ll have fun burning you in the 2K forums. You’re a bigger nerd than I am. lol
November 10th, 2010 at 11:08 pm
How many wins do the Kings get in 2K association? Like, 20 -30. I’m already in the playoffs. Underdogs happen, you just don’t know how to accept it.
November 11th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Reposting this in its original form, since Mr. Jonah has taken his absurdity to disgusting new heights by actually going in and CHANGING my comment. Classy move, Jonah, it’s great to see your journalistic integrity in full force.
["Classy" is hurling epithets at people? You broke the rules of decorum - we reserve the right to edit nasty, immature emails. - Jonah Falcon]
November 11th, 2010 at 2:39 pm
So, you don’t have to follow your own rules of decorum? Here’s a comment you directed at one of your readers:
“Er, blowouts exist in the NBA, stupid.”
Seriously Jonah, grow up. I just called you a moron, no worse than calling one of your readers stupid. Yet, somehow that is nasty and immature?
Editing the comment to take out “nasty” words like Moron would be one thing, but to replace it with “genius” and alter the whole meaning of the comment is quite another.
Also, is “awful” a nasty, immature epitaph? Because your podcast is AWFUL, not AWESOME. And that’s like, you know, an opinion, if those types of things are allowed in the comment section.

Dude, I don’t know what crack pipe you’re smoking, but NBA 2K11 cheats like the mother. Why are you defending this crap game?
November 11th, 2010 at 6:09 pm
JRock, don’t worry. I have been taking screen shots of this ‘article’. Jonah can’t hide or change things without others knowing. I reserve the right to expose this mother to the whole world.

Wow, you guys are total losers.
November 11th, 2010 at 6:34 pm
Jamie must be Jonah. Really, the AI cheats? How come I can beat the AI on 50/50 HoF, have a fun, realistic and enjoyable game, as do others, yet you say it cheats.
The losers here are the one making “reviews” which are nothing more than a list of complaints. NBA 2K forums have official sections and threads dedicated to whiny gamers. Go complain over there.

November 11th, 2010 at 8:05 pm
lol these guys must be paid by 2k cause the ai cheats like mad and the player mode sucks ass for the second year in a row. i dont care about mj, they should have just worked on the game instead of pleasing mj.
the games needs to be patched and fixed cause its broken.
November 12th, 2010 at 3:34 am
Tootz: I’m more likely a WWE wrestler than be paid by 2k
And thank you JRock and crippknottick
November 12th, 2010 at 11:24 am
how much is 2k paying you? i want in on some of dat action.
November 12th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
Yo the game is not that good. I dont know why everyone is defending it so hard for.Just admit it, the game cheats. Most of the problems are in the My Player Mode.
1)Seems like they took offensive fouls out the game totally
2.)The CPU mostly always scores on bogus foul calls..which is basically to penalize you for playing good defense.
3.)There no point of playing MY Player Mode cause its basically 9 vs. 1..since your team is dumbed down for whatever reason
4)The CPU are 3 point masters..while your team cant make open shots and also takes bad shots
4.)Everyone knows about the passing already..
Who cares that MJ is in the game and the graphics are nice..The gamplay and controls are horrible, which is what a game shoul be about..If i want something that looks real i’ll go watch a real game
November 12th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
1. minor glitch which will be fixed
2. Your team scores on bogus foul calls too. Tit-for-tat
3. Run a motion offense
4. Really depends on your team and the defensive pressure you put on the opponent
Go play NBA Jam or NBA 2k10 if ya want to play something that resembles a fake NBA game.
November 12th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
What a doosh this Bret guy is. I think he’s paid by 2K Sports too.
November 12th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
#4. Yes, Bret, because Lord knows, I’ve seen players leap from high off the key to intercept an alley oop in mid-air. Dream on.
November 13th, 2010 at 3:40 am
Kez= tootz
Jonah: I’ve seen NBA players do it if a point guard is dumb enough to try an alley-oop pass through traffic
November 13th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
Wrong. I see the IP addresses and they’re both different. But please, make spurious accusations.
And I’m talking about getting an alley oop at the PINNACLE of its arc, which is ridiculous. But keep defending the indefensible.
November 13th, 2010 at 5:27 pm
Jonah: well that’s impossible really. If it’s impossible for Jordan to do, then it’s impossible for the CPU to do.
Give me the video on it, then I’ll tell ya how the passer messed up. Whether the passer was to close to the defender, or his pass was more of a line drive, or whether the tipper wasn’t actually at the pinnacle.
And I find it funny how people are calling me a douche. Aaah, the irony
November 13th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
Oh yes… and on the passing…
Tit-for-tat. The user can do those impossible steals too you know, and I’ve seen stretches where the player’s AI made those impossible steals too.
So for passing, the computer is not a cheating bastard, since the user can make those impossible steals too
November 14th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
I have been playing the 2k basketball games for a very long time and remember 2k6 being rated as one of the best basketball sims ever, look it up (A very playable game). But I have to say this game is very frustrating. The learning curve for veteran players or beginners does not matter, it is the fun factor especially on the default level. I have seen point guards like Rondo dunk on Gasol with ease which never happens. When you play a game that you are familiar with it should not take such drastic adaptability to enjoy it.
November 18th, 2010 at 7:12 pm
@ron
I’ve seen Nate Robinson dunk over centers too in real life. Is it really impossible? Did you see how Rondo just obliterated Big Z in the last Boston-Miami game? Rondo DUNKED on him, and, Rondo almost hurt himself doing it. It’s not impossible, it’s just not expected.
@ Jonah
Here is the whole point in a nutshell. This article should of been called “Things wrong with NBA 2K” and by no means be considered a review. You need to review everything the game has to offer and not just pick out modes you play and are disappointed in. That’s the whole point of this ridiculousness. Your complaint article is not a review and should not be considered one. If I were an unsuspecting buyer and I read just your ‘review’ I would not purchase NBA 2K11 based on the fact that there only appear to be 3 game modes based on what you covered in the article.
November 18th, 2010 at 7:23 pm
Yeah, were paid by 2K. I make six figures a year backing up 2K. Oh, and last year for 2k10, I was one of the non-stop complainers on the forum screaming bloody murder for a patch. Don’t believe me, just look up my posts on the 2K forums. 90% are negative towards 2K Sports for their disaster product called 2K10, designed for easy paint play. I mean come’on, people were averaging 60% – 80% FG percentage, 80 – 120 points in the paint, and that is not realistic
It’s not easy to bull-doze into the paint anymore, just like in real life.
It’s not easy to throw 3-point range ally-oops anymore, just like in real life.
Really, besides some very minor menu/commenter related bugs fundamental basketball is here and I hope it stays like that.
2K6 best sim game? In what, 2006? From what I’ve experienced in previous NBA 2K games before 2K9 is that even Rashard Lewis can drive into the paint like he was LeBron James in his prime. That is NOT realistic.
If you can’t handle the 12 min quarters, HoF difficulty and 50/50 sliders then you simply are not in the same league as us hardcore, day-in day-out, basketball fans.
November 18th, 2010 at 7:46 pm
OK I do have a legitimate complaint or two about 2K11. So I’ll share it with you to show I’m not just defending 2K.
[Hardware Compatibility]
When you think of those two words, and you mix sound cards into the mix what comes to mind? Name the top 3 selling or sold sound cards of all time. Sound cards that most people would posess in their computer.
I put:
1. Motherboard audio (Realtek and nForce)
2. Soundblaster X-Fi series
3. Soundblaster Live!/Audigy/Audigy2/Audigy2ZS/Audigy4 series
The two things all these devices have in common is that they are in most people’s PC’s old and new, and they are all DirectSound3D compliant.
NBA 2K11 uses some kind of XAudio-to-DirectSound3D conversion and it breaks compatibility with cards such as the Live!/Audigys series (my card is Audigy4). That is inexcusable. Just give us a software renderer audio API instead of that shitty XBox related sound API (XAudio).
[Unnecessary Audio Compression]
First 2K9 on PC sounded fantastic. (13GB installation)
2K10 dramatically compressed the commentary audio and resulted in phone quality sound. (7GB installation)
2K11 took it a step further and compressed the menu music too so now it sounds so bad I can’t stand using headphones to play the game with. (6.5GB installation)
Gee 2K, you must think we are running out of hard drive space so you decided to cut the audio quality by 75% in order to appeal to those with old Maxtor 20GB hard drives.
November 24th, 2010 at 6:11 pm
Patch just came out
December 3rd, 2010 at 1:07 pm
Jonah is completely correct about 2K11 and it’s last two predecessors! He is offering a critique of the game and anyone can agree or disagree but shouldn’t order him to not be negative. I suspect Jonah lives in America, and if he does, the last time I checked it was a free country!
As far as the game is concerned…I am a gamer that especially loves the 2K series. That being said, the basketball game has pregrogrammed AI cheats that manifest themselves very prominently in The Association Mode when the difficulty is set at All Star or HOF level. I’ve done experiments with the last three titles and discovered the same issues. Adjusting the sliders helps, but in the higher difficulty levels you have to REALLY adjust them low.
I’ve concluded that the game adds on the AI cheat during the save function. Over the past three years I’ve noted that if you shut a game off that appears to have AI cheats in play, then restart another game, there is little if no deviation from the AI’s previous game! In other words the game will mirror the previous one. This is not something that parrots anything I’ve read on-line, but it is known to my personal gaming community, which is small compared to the Web community. But I can say that my community is NOT influenced by corporate interests either! Anyway, the above described problem can be reset by shutting the game off again and then restarting.
The caveat to the above procedure could be just as frusterating. And the caveat is that despite the platform (I use X-box and PS3)the game file would be corrupted on the very next load up, i.e. it couldn’t be opened, but ONLY if you’ve restarted the game more than three times! I’ve tested this 10 times on both systems, which is enough for me to recognize it as an issue.
I was able to defeat the above issue by doing multiple save files, which is not desireable because it sucks up valuable space on your hard drive! Another method that works intermittently is to save the game over your file immediately after the autosave ends. The problem with this is that sometimes the AI cheats have not been added to your file during the autosave and you’ve now just added them by doing your manual save.
Jonah I want to thank you and say that you’re not alone. The game is still fun for me, but in regards to NBA 2K11, one guy on a recent YouTube post stated, “If you find yourself swearing at your television and throwing your controllers, you have to ask yourself if that is what you really want out of your experience?”
Anyway several blogs are available on the NBA 2K11 AI cheats, but in no way should anybody’s opinion dissuade you from purchasing the title if that’s what you really want.
February 5th, 2011 at 10:07 pm
Thank you. Thank you. Thank You.
This is the worse game they have ever released. It’s slow. Real slow. The animations take forever to finish.
I doubt anyone praising this game has ever played 2k7 or 2k8. 2k8 was the greatest game they ever released.
Since then this series has gone straight to the toilet and is living off it’s reputation.
I swear I would pay 60 bucks for online access and a roster update to NBA2k8 instead of this basketball in molasses mess.
Since 2k8 they have completely destroyed the dribble system. There was no reason to move the hesitation button. Dumb Move.
The hesitation button was on the right trigger for 10 years.
You are forced to play on the default setting because the dribble stick is just broke with out the hesitation move on the right trigger.
You used to be able to hold the left trigger in the dribble stick setting and your right stick would become a shot stick. Its gone. That no longer happens.
Every year they have reduced the cameras allowed online. We are down to just 3 now.
This game reminds me of the live series. Ice skating all over the place.
Here are the rankings for this game which was great at one time and now is so broke they can’t even fix it.
1. NBA2k8 Greatest BBall game ever made. The dribble system was the best. I felt like I actually was on the court in real time. No waiting for animations to finish so I can move. Online was tight and it worked. The lobby was great with the message board.
2.NBA2k7 See NBA2k8
3. NBA2k10. It was ok. But it was way to easy to score in the paint. I would play games in 2k10 where people would score 90% of their points in the paint. Paint fest.
4. NBA2k9 After 2k8 it was a huge disappointment. This was the beginning of them destroying the dribble system and the online community. No message board in the lobbies. Why.
The spin move was the only way to get open and everybody used the spin move every time down the court. Pure junk.
NBA2k11: This series has hit rock bottom. If you can get online it’s slow. I’m playing basketball where I barely want to touch the stick because I never know where or how far I may slide on defense. No one man’s up on defense. You just wait till someone makes a move then switch so you can bump them. How is that basketball.
Two Ocean One: your right. The game is more frustrating than fun. One broke stick is enough for me. I traded mine in once 2k stated they would not release another patch. That says it all. The game is broke and they can not fix it.
The days of actually knowing how to play defense are over. It’s switch and push then the animations take over. You can waist 3-4 seconds off the shot clock waiting for your man to recover. The game moves way to slow.
This is not the first time 2k has done this. NBA2k1 was great. 2k2-2k6 were average at best.
Me and my group of friends were still playing 2k1 up until 2k7 was released on the 360.
I will continue to play 2k but it will be the 2k8 version. I will take my own time and update my rosters so I can actually play basketball.
I remember when 2k9 came out their would be more people online playing 2k8.
Let’s not forget how 2k did their hockey and baseball series.
It will be a cold day in hell when I purchase one of their sports games.
I will rent it first before I ever purchase and I will never purchase the game on release day.
It took a patch to be released before 2k8 was playable. Even though that turned out to be their best release. They never release a game on day one that works.
February 5th, 2011 at 10:13 pm
2K2 on the Dreamcast was my favorite.
February 5th, 2011 at 10:14 pm
One more thing. I came across your review and I will definitely check out your page on the regular.
Thanks for saying what needed to be said.
This game is terrible.
So terrible they won’t even release any more patches for it.

2K2 on the Dreamcast was my favorite.

I hear you. No problem with that. 2k1 was mine on Dreamcast. 2k8 on the 360.
But like you said. 2k11 couldn’t hold any of their jock straps.
February 8th, 2011 at 11:59 pm
NBA 2k11 is a total joke. You have to play PG or the NPC will just stand there till you go where it wants you to be and if you do not , it will wait till 2 sec and shoot blind from 5-8 feet above the key.Second Team Chem is broken , you can answer all loyal or get Arrows up for Chem and you still lose ground. I have seen over the back calls on players who are not even near the ball. Or have called to shoot from the open shot and hit shoot just to have my player run 3-5 steps and then shoot after a Defender had time to get on me. Nothing good in this game. They had a good idea and screwed it up like normal. I posted on the EA forms asking if they would fix these things and got banned for “Trolling” 1 Post mind you.
February 9th, 2011 at 1:56 am
Well, Electronic Arts would consider it trolling since they don’t make NBA 2K11. lol
February 9th, 2011 at 4:32 pm
Oops , typo , meant 2k.
February 17th, 2011 at 11:55 pm
Ok this game is fun, but you have to be a sheep or 2k fanboy to think the ai doesn’t cheat. It does. And before i anybody says the typical “learn how to play remark” i should say that i’ve been playin 2k since 2k5 and im not bad at all at 2k11. I play on superstar and i have the best record in the league in my association, number 1 seed in playoffs. I have no problem with losing either(otherwise i would have a perfect record) it’s more about HOW i lose. Some of you guys need to stop acting like sheep and fanboys and realize the game IS full of flaws(not as bad as 2k10 thank god) but there are still some pretty huge problems with AI, animations, and glitches. The game is fun but very overrated. It’s a great game at the core but it’s plagued by problems.
I suggest you guys take a look at this guy’s video he’s on point. Especially when he starts showing actual footage at around 4:55

March 8th, 2011 at 8:05 pm
This game sucked real bad!!!
March 16th, 2011 at 7:22 pm
It’s not really precise to say the A.I. cheats. Well, it isn’t inaccurate either. The thing is, you can call it a learning curve, improved AI, whatever you want, but if the game actually adjusts players’ ability to make the winning team weaker and the losing team stronger, it’s just not fair to players. Of course, some people are going to be so good at this game that they can get by anyway – but it does a disservice to your customers when you program a game in such a way that it will anger the players.
I just don’t think that utilizing a “clutch” system has to mean that you throw realism out the window to make the game harder. There’s nothing more infuriating than getting clear, open 3-point looks with about half a second to let your player get a feel for the distance, and then taking the open shot and missing despite having a 99 3-point rating. Multiple times in a row. While the AI blows past your outside defenders to pick up 2-on-1 layups and get the foul for it, never missing.
It’s also not as if the people noticing this are bad players. For instance, my team blew out most of our competition to become second seed in the east, continuing to dominate our enemies in the playoffs… UNTIL they’re in danger of being eliminated. And then suddenly, they’re unstoppable.
March 17th, 2011 at 7:28 pm
How about this latest bullcrap:
5 seconds left in the game. My Bucks are trailing the Heat by 3 points. My Player is a 3-point specialist. He’s wide open, about 2 feet away, waiting for the pass so he can attempt the tie-up shot.
My A.I. controlled teammate elects instead to not pass the ball, take the 5 second violation, and turn it over.
March 18th, 2011 at 8:55 am
hey i agree 2k11 is pretty bad, sometimes i cant even be bothered because of the ai, but somedays i just accept the game for what it is and have a really good time.
the dribbling and defense needs work and i no that My Player is work in progress but come on guys. im starting SG for the hornets and chris paul never EVER finds me my only hope to score, is to make my own god damn plays, plus my team has the worst field goal percentage in the league, chris pauls fgp is like 0.3 something, taking all kinds of messed up shots, and yet hes classed as better than me even tho i bet him in points, rebounds, assits and fg percentage.
i wish they ACTUALLY made the greatest basketball game ever before deciding to put the greatest basketball player on the cover
BUT HEY still beats elite, when does that come out again OH WAIT……
May 21st, 2011 at 11:20 am
The 3 point shooting part just needs some getting used to. The 2k11 franchise took every player’s way of shooting to the next level. And I agree to those who disagreed with you, Jonah. You didn’t mention all the game has to offer thus made your review bias. I personally love the game, only been playing it for less than 20 times I think but I love the game. The difficulty makes it even more challenging… Isn’t that what we’re all looking for, a challenge?
February 2nd, 2012 at 8:39 pm
It’s sad reading so many criticizing comments coming from so many lame and dumb individuals. I too have played NBA2K11 for way too long now and have experienced everything posted in the article. It has nothing to do with game play talent, it has everything to do with bringing to light the bad AI in NBA2K.
I finish MyPlayer Mode games with 30+ points, 10+ assists (no turn overs) and 10+ rebounds. Why? Because that’s all I wanted to achieve; I could easily score over 100 points a game.
With that typed in, would you consider me a bad player too? Bottom line, NBA2K11’s AI is totally broken in MyPlayer Mode! I’m not even addressing other game modes right now, just like the article didn’t address other game modes directly, but rather in-directly. Although, I can’t imagine the issues in MyPlayer Mode don’t exists in other game modes.
As a programmer, graphic artists, web developer and game developer, I can truly say NBA2K11’s AI is just bad logic. Notice the key word there, “Logic.” Yes, bad AI logic is the reason the game’s AI is broken. As a developer, let me bring some things to light for those of you with small minds who will obvious criticize my words with ignorance…..
2K11 has player ratings right? It also has game level and AI sliders that can be adjusted. All of you have noticed (if you truly played the game) how players perform differently when adjusting the game level and AI sliders, right?
Well guess what? You just defeated the purpose of even having individual player ratings, 2K. Get a clue! What good is having a player with a 99% shot rating on every shot, who takes good look shots, only hit 20% of their shots because the game level was jacked up and the CPU’s AI sliders where jacked up? In other words, the game cheats the player in order to make the game appear harder.
That’s a false illusion of competition. Every sports game is based on the same BS logic, even John Madden Football. You can’t walk up to D. Rose and say, “Hey Rose, will you drop down to Pro mode so that rookie guarding you can have a chance?“ or “Hey Rose, lower your AI sliders 40 percent, will ya?”
IT IS NOT ROCKET SIENCE DEVELOPERS!!!!
The same thing it takes to win in real life are the same things AI should be based on! Theoretically, there shouldn’t even be a game level change or AI sliders for that matter. Player Ratings should be everything!
That is, every player should be their own individual AI, which will collide with all other players’ AI. The same way Talent and Intelligence collide in real life. Things should play out the way they’re going to play out; the way it is in real life.
There is no reason for a gamer playing MyPlayer Mode to finish a game with 3 assists out of 50 perfect assist passes. If NBA players were that sorry in real life, they wouldn’t even be in the NBA. Yeah… Get a clue! Player’s stealing balls with their backs turned…. I’m not even going to get into it, the article above brought out a lot of the BS in the game.
As a developer, I pride myself on my work. Games like NBA2K11 are reminders to me, that poor AI logic doesn’t cut it. I am current developing what will be the greatest City Sim/War simulator every (for the PC platform). I realize, when gamers play my games, the quality of that game will reflect back on my talents. I am talent loaded and wish for buyers of my titles to realize that.
Such a realization can never happen if I’m going to code poor game AI logic or bad game design all together. You can’t feed people your crap and expect them to love you for it, that’s the honest God truth! As long as foolish people keep posting up good replies about a game that does not deserve it, the fixes for that game will never be made, because the Company that made it know they can keep feeding you their same old crap, and you’ll keep spending money on it like a good obedient idiot.
A lot of people that post good replies about games that do not deserve them are usually in connection with that game/company/employees, a lot. You never know who’s behind the PC on the internet and have to keep that in mind. I actually had a game developer that worked for a large company send me constant BS emails because I made some true statements about a poorly designed game, which opened the eyes of people who were looking to waste money on it.
That’s one thing Developers do not like…. Another Developer who has the knowledge of game development (and even more talented and brightness) highlight the issues and BS with their game. I honestly feel the perfect AI sports game will never be made unless my company makes it. Unfortunately, sports are not on the table now for my company, but will surface in the future. Until then, you have to keep playing broken games like NBA2K11 and John Madden Football.
I give these sports making companies a 10 out of 10 for the visuals. Good artists in a company can good a long way (and sell that game!). The problem is, most true gamers that want a quality experience will not care about visual. Game Flow, Game Balance and Logic are everything when it comes to game development. Graphics can wait. If the technical issues aren’t taken care of, you have no game; no matter what it looks like.
Even now, as I develop a simulator title for my company, Graphics are last on the table. It’s all about the code right now. That’s the way it should be. Once the game is complete with code perfection (no flaws or poor design), then the true Graphics will be swapped in. Perfect code, Sharp Graphics….perfect game! Although you can’t please everyone when making a game, that’s impossible. You can however, try not to displease them with BS broken AI logic, like NBA2K11’s and EA’s John Madden.
If I created “typos” forgive me; the mature eyes are not as good.
