Jack Tretton Caught In Lie Again

IGN’s Arthur Gies thought it odd when Sony PR man Jack Tretton claimed that 1M units of the PlayStation Move had been sold in the United States.

As it is, his suspicions were correct.

Sony confirmed that one million units were not sold; rather, that figure was the number of units shipped to stores.

Sony did not disclose actual sales figures. Previous analyst estimates indicate, however, that Move U.S. sales were around 300,000 units in September.

Tretton’s response? “Retail demand is incredibly strong and we’re working hard to keep the product in stock. We believe consumers have already shown their preference for a precise, interactive game experience”, which sounds suspiciously like Tretton talking about PlayStation 3 “shortages”. Will he be offering $1200 for each unsold Move?

Other Jack Tretton lies:

[UPDATE: Apparently, 1M units were shipped to North America and Latin America. Sony lumped in a territory that is almost never accounted in sales figures. This is what happens when you don't have real NPD figures available.]

[UPDATE 2: Reuters has corrected its report, and stated 1M units were shipped, not sold, to the "Americas", which doesn't quite let the reader know that it's including all of North America and Latin America.]

Wow… that all sounds eerily familiar, doesn’t it?

“Sony certainly has had difficulty in telling the truth, preferring to release shipped numbers rather than the numbers sold through at retail as far back as the early PlayStation 2 days.”

    3. Sean Says:

wow, so, how does Arthur’s d— taste?

where are you and Gies getting that Sony or Tretton actually said the words “sold 1 million”? even the official Playstation twitter account tweeted the IGN article and says they “shipped” that amount.

was the shipping/sold thing misleading? yes, but they never said they “sold” 1 million units. that was Reuters’ fault for using that word, not Sony’s.

get your head out of Arthur’s Microsoft-branded ass and read the facts.

who’s really the one spreading lies here? glad to see your idea of journalism is from reading one dude’s twitter account.

    4. Jonah Falcon Says:

      Reuters… lied?

      What?

Sony does this ALL. THE. TIME. As Jordan will tell you, when Sony reports European sales figures, they leave out the UK, because the PS3 doesn’t sell there.

Sony doesn’t care about you, Sean. Why do you feel the need to defend it? LOL And what does Microsoft have to do with ANYTHING?

    5. cayal Says:

Awww… Jonah, you’re awesome, bro. Cheer up, you know you’re right.

    6. Stigmurder Says:

Sony bad, Make big corporate lie lol! This is marketing rhetoric. Many large corporations do this sort of thing. Microsoft frequently releases supposed sales numbers which are just units shipped to retailers. Nothing new here, just corporations being corporations. And on we move…No pun intended

    7. person Says:

Um “shipped” is sold to retail, so as far as Sony is concerned they sold that many units, because they have, one million units have been bought off them, why would these companies track sales to consumers? So it’s not really a lie as much as a misunderstanding, since the units are sold as far as every definition of the word sold goes

    8. Michael Pachter Says:

I admit that my estimation for PlayStation Move was not spot on, and because of that, I have made an official response regarding this subject…

“It’s ahead of what I thought previously, I think that they are a lock to sell 3 to 4 million by Dec. 31, and a lock to hit more than 5 million by fiscal year end” on March 31.

you wrote “Previous analyst estimates indicate, however, that Move U.S. sales were around 300,000 units in September.”

that’s was Michael Pachter who estimated that number, do you know what he said today?

if you think I’m wrong please respond, don’t delete the comment, that makes you look even more like a reseted xbot who’s pissed because of Move’s success and Kinect casual approach

    17. Jonah Homo Says:

So full of shit you filthy cocksuckers. Show a source link with a direct quote that states “sold” and not “shipped”. Can’t do it? Then shut the fuck up.

And on your 2008 vs 2007 sales “lie” your link goes to an editorial article of your own fucking website…and it discusses 2009 vs 2008 and for US only. Are you retarded? Also, the US isn’t the only country in the world that buys games you know. Worldwide 2009 outsold 2008 outsold 2007 for the PS3.

Basically you don’t site one reliable source in any article you link above… You might as well work for M$…you could spin Kinect as a new game system with them and blow $500 million to try to trick people into buying your mistake.

Eat shit and die, filthy taint-licking jackasses!

    18. keysy Says:

actually im better at ping pong because of move

    19. doa766 Says:

this reminds me of the thread last year on movie sites about Avatar’s boxoffice number

a lot of pople wanted it to fail, and at first they were screaming it was a flop, then they started with the higher 3D prices, then with the no serious competion argument, then with the inflation argument and as the movie kept cashing then the crickets came

it’s just the same with Move, since xbots are pissed that kinect is for kids and housewives and Move has core appeal they want it to fail but it’s just not happening

this “it’s shipped, not sold numbers” is incredibly stupid when it’s clear that Move is sold out everywhere, do you think retailers keep controllers on their warehouses when everyday the store guys have to tell people that they don’t have stock of Move?

    20. mxpxboy Says:

This whole article just comes off as childish and biased against Sony for whatever reason. Even if he did use the word “Sold”, what difference does it make? Big companies always use that term when describing sales figures because when a unit leaves the warehouse, it’s, more or less, considered sold.

    21. Your mom Says:

I see a lot of bitching about how Tretton “lied”, even though this alleged lie isn’t linked to anywhere in this article, and even if he did say that, it was cleared up in what, a couple hours?

      Let’s all go get outraged!

    22. The Unbiased Poster Says:

What kind of fanboy wrote this???

Microsoft does this all the time as well.

It’s nothing new from companies. The guy was just hyping his product, you know, doing his job.

Either way, the PSP and PS3 are both incredibly successful systems.

    23. @ Jonah Falcon Says:

This isn’t a news article. This is a cry for attention.

You’re clearly trying too hard to mark Tretton and Sony as liars. But I guess to immature fanboys, Microsoft and Nintendo never do anything wrong when your goal is simply to attack Sony.

You guys are the shame of gaming journalism!

    24. Maindude Says:

How is this news? I only read it to have a laugh. I did. He’s Sony’s “PR GUY” what do you expect? Every business-savvy company does this. And to label an OPINION, “move makes you better at games,” a lie is ignorant. There’s no proof that Jack knows any better…for all you know he absolutely believes this, that’s his truth. Jonah Falcon…step up son.

    25. Jeff Says:

      Oh Jack Tretton you crazy.

    26. 1Redhellomega Says:

Nice to see that I’m not the only one not blinded by SONY’s lies. Sorry if i have offended anyone, but I can never trust this company EVER, that is my opinion and i stand by it 100%, You may have provided the proof, but i have first hand experience of what lies can do, Sony LIES brough the end of SEGA, there was nothing that the DC (Dreamcast)could not handle, but the LIES LIES, emotions engine, what was promise back then not even the PS3 with all active 7 processor can create. I was present at one show where they has a work model of some girl sitting a chair, the speach, only with the power of the emotion chip/engine is the possible. DC was online, on like the PS2, OS was Windows CE. If you ever wondered why MS enter this market, here is one reason, i’m not saying it’s the main or only one of them because DC was a partnership between SEGA and MS. This is proof, you should never lie. Sorry for digressing. Even if Sony started to tell the true, it would be impossible to believe a word of it.

    27. Jordan Says:

If Microsoft “does the same thing all the time” then it should be really easy to link to somewhere proving that, right?

      Well, go ahead… we’re waiting…

    28. the1 Says:

      wat a flamebait fanboy article.

First off in terms of hardware sales Microsoft counts units SOLD to retail as SOLD. same as PS in this instance dumbass.

get some fact donkey your claims are completely unsupported. joke article.

[Um, no. Sony stated it was 1M units sold. They later amended it to say "shipped" when they got caught. - Jonah Falcon.]

    30. Stian Says:

First off. No one said they sold 1 million units in september. I read the article myself. It clearly stated that move had sold 1 million units during their first 30 days of availability. Since the move was released september 17th, 300 000 units in North America occured over only thirteen days, not during their first 30 days. Get your facts straight people!

    31. funny Says:

So…let me get this straight. You’re calling Jack Tretton a liar for saying they sold 1M units of PS Move. You do realize that from Sony’s standpoint, they have sold and shipped 1M units. Once a company (i.e. Gamestop, Best Buy, Toys R Us, etc.) receives product, they have already paid for the product to resell it. Jack Tretton isn’t lying. He’s just relying on different numbers than ignorant consumers pay attention to.

Get your facts straight and take some damn business classes…then you’re journalism might actually have some validity.

    32. Dave Hedgehog Says:

Isn’t this how it’s always been? There’s no way these companies get data from every single outlet because it’s just not possible. Not even the NPD does that. It’s not just the gaming industry that does this, either.

When a unit is shipped to stores, it’s been paid for by the retailer, hence it’s a sale for the company. Unless you honestly think that Sony/MS/Nintendo lend products to stores and they pay them when they’re sold?

But you got a hit from me, so job done, I guess. Congrats.

    33. iago Says:

What an idiotic article, pointing out how Sony mixes up Sold/shipped, wile forgetting that Microsoft started this whole sharade.

This site surely has an MS dick up its ass.

And Jordan, Miscrosoft even have called “repaired/excanged consoles” as sales, disprove me that . .. .
(see what i did there, cunt.)

And to the guy wining about how the US isn’t included in EU sales…
The UK isn’t europe, they use the pound still, dumb ass.

This site is so full of fail and up in MS ass, its painfully obvious.
Good to know they on the B grade side though.

    34. dumb fuck Says:

@jonah your a liar yourself lol.. non of this is true, he didnt not state it sold 1 million in the US.. and then in the comments you just said “they leave out UK sales because it doesnt sell there” are you serious? it and the ps3 are selling and sell very well here in the UK.. your a 360 fanboy with a blog.. time to shut up dude :)

    35. Nuno Says:

“Um, no. Sony stated it was 1M units sold. They later amended it to say “shipped” when they got caught. – Jonah Falcon.”
Can you please provide the link with that? Or should we just… TRUST you?

Because in an article about lies… you know… trust is an issue!

      Anyway, poor, poor article/opinion.
      Some of your points:
      - More than 70 games on the PSP on December? True. We can count Minis and PS1 re-releases, or can’t we? They are “games on the PSP”, you know?
      - PS3 better on 2008 than 2007? True. You do know there are other lands, far away, on the other side of the ocean where people like to buy products with quality and have “some” issues about RRoD and stuff like that…
      - PS3 makes you better at games? Yes. I suck at Flight Control with the dualshock but I’m great with Move (I doubt Move will be good for FIFA, but it will make you better on Time Crysis… etc.).

      Jack Tretton lies? Yes.
This article has lies? Yes. A lot of.

    36. Biff Says:

This whole article is a lie I don’t remember Sony claiming they sold 1 million in America you sir are a lier yourself and you are just making up lies saying Sony lied where’s the proof for all the things you are saying?!, you’re full of shit!.

    37. Biff Says:

The funny thing is I don’t see anything in the article that Sony sold 1 million in America this guy is just full of crap and by the way Sony didn’t do worse in 2008 where did you get 30% from?.

    38. Biff Says:

And that was according to reuters report Sony didn’t claim this at all that they sold 1 million moves in America

“So, did Reuters get the ‘Sold’ bit confused with ‘Shipped’? It’s a huge difference both in meaning and in take-up by the people who count, gamers.”

    39. Jack Tretton Says:

Well Sony has had a tough last couple of months with no AAA exclusives, delays and lower than expected Move sales.

Looks like Jacky boy will be hitting the bottle a little more than usual and along with the the lies kick in to try and save face,

Remember his behavior at E3, acting as if he was stealing the generation from Nintendo and Microsoft…

Oh well, the truth always comes out eventually.

    40. Rza Says:

    42. WL Says:

      Well Jonah,
You’re getting the hits you wanted on your website even if it means writing this trash.

“Previous analysts estimates” is Pachter and he admits he was wrong. Anyway, no point in restating everyone else’s comments pointing out how idiotic this “article” is.

    43. Jordan Says:

@iago – No… Microsoft did not report replacement consoles as sales… Know how I know? Because up until September of this year it was the NPD reporting console sales sold AT RETAIL and not Microsoft reporting the numbers.

Since replacement consoles are shipped by Microsoft and aren’t retail sales then they wouldn’t be counted in the NPD.

Like I say, if you can prove it, link to it. Jonah and I were able to come up with quite a bit of links pointing to Sony as a liar, surely you can find one link backing your claim.

    44. Sean Says:

Jack Tretton is the scum of the gaming industry. People think that activision is bad, well Jack Tretton is worse. He hypes up everything PlayStation and never executes leaving consumers dissapointed and states opinions as if they were fact and constantly lies. The numbers are against you Jack. Just give up.

    58. Sean Says:

      ok, let’s talk facts:

      1. nowhere in this article do you reference or link to any news source that has Jack Tretton, or anyone from Sony, saying “we sold 1 million Move controllers in the Americas” or anything like it.

      2. you even updated the article to say that Reuters fixed their report to say “shipped” not “sold”. so, the article that you DIDN’T EVEN LEGITIMATELY SOURCE IN THE FIRST PLACE, now doubly doesn’t back up your claim, here. yet, you still have this article up, and labeled as “Jack Tretton Caught In Lie Again”.

      3. Tretton isn’t just Sony’s “PR man”, he’s the fucking president and CEO of SCEA.

      4. instead of providing hard evidence, you try to sucker punch the majority of the commenters on here with smart-ass responses. granted, a lot of people resorted to name-calling (myself, at first, included, i admit) but, a lot of points in the comments are still legit, and, you chose to respond unprofessionally.

      5. i’ll admit my first post was a bit offensive, and i shouldn’t have lashed out on Arthur like that. as much as i often disagree with him, he can be funny, smart, and more often than not, back up his claims with legit facts and sources (albeit, not really in this case, but, in other situations, yeah). at least, he doesn’t publish false news articles on IGN. he knows his opinions are just that – opinions. that why you read this on his Twitter account, not the website he works for. but, hey, i’m sure he appreciates the negative publicity you just gave him by dropping his name on here, just as he’s starting to get some notoriety on IGN.

finally, doesn’t it seem weird to you that no one cares to comment on your other article about the PSP being the most returned electronics device? maybe that’s because that one actually has numbers and facts (which, of course, you got from another website that did the actual research, but, you know…games journalism in 2010) to back it up?

my agenda in these comments isn’t to be “Sony Defense Force” (which is, of course, your go-to response for anyone who disagrees with you), but to call you out on your bullshit idea of “journalism”.

now, if you want an OPINION, here’s one for you:

as much as you want to act like us “SONY FANBOYS” are jumping at your throat, this article makes you come off as an “xbox fanboy” yourself, and you posted this article without looking up any other sources immediately after reading Arthur’s twitter account. you then shrug it off all in the name of “journalism”. it’s phony, almost to the point of slander.

and all of this, in hopes to get your site a bunch of hits. and the sad FACT from that, is that you probably did get them. so, yeah, way to go.

1 and 2: The original Reuters report quoted Tretton as saying “SOLD” not shipped. GameStooge isn’t the only one reporting that.

      3. So we’re supposed to excuse a lie because it comes from the CEO? Seriously? Doesn’t that make lying to the public WORSE?

    60. Jonah Falcon Says:

And with that, I’m retiring from the subject. There’s nothing new being brought to the table in this discussion, and I’m not into a circle jerk right now, thanks.

    61. Sean Says:

holy shit, what is wrong with you?

neither of those articles say that Tretton claimed to have sold 1 million controllers.

and the original Reuters report was TITLED “Sold” but there was no quote in there.

you can’t lie about something that you never said.

but, you know what? i’m going to step away too. after looking more into you, and your other articles on here, it’s quite obvious that you guys have a specific agenda with this site, and that there’s no getting through to you.

have fun being 40 years old and dedicating yourself to acting like you’re 15.

Sony sells 1 m Move units in Americas

      Published on Fri, Oct 22, 2010 at 14:44 | Updated at Fri, Oct 22, 2010 at 15:40 | Source : Reuters

Sony Corp said on Thursday it sold 1 million units of its Move motion-based video game controller in its first month on the market in the Americas region.
Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said demand is easily outstripping supply, and said the company does not expect to have enough supply on hand until February.

“We had to go back and increase production twice, we’re absolutely maxed out right now,” Tretton said.
Sony launched Move, which is used with its PlayStation 3 video game console, on September 19 in the US with its camera priced at USD 39.99 and its motion controller wand at USD 49.99.
Move is available at more than 30,000 retail outlets in the Americas.
Sony said previously that it has sold better than 1.5 million Move units in Europe. It just launched in Japan.

    63. Jordan Says:

@Sean – I hear the remedial reading class at Sylvan Learning Centers is really good. You might want to look into it.

From the first link I posted:

“According to Reuters, SCEA president Jack Tretton says the company’s sold 1 million units in the American market,”

From the second link I posted:

“Sony Computer Entertainment America has revealed to Reuters that sales of the device have eclipsed 1 million units.”

If Jonah is guilty of anything, it’s not accurately sourcing the original Reuters quote, but there is absolutely no argument that this is how it was originally reported and not corrected until other reporters questioned them on it.

    64. Jordan Says:

p.s. I wonder why it’s mostly the Sony fans who get their panties in a twist over stuff like this?

I don’t remember similar issues when I reported that Kinect (then Project Natal) was having trouble with black folks:

      http://www.gamestooge.com/2009/06/10/project-natal-the-first-racist-peripheral/

or when Jonah covered a former Microsoft employee when they claimed the project was doomed to failure:

      http://www.gamestooge.com/2010/05/27/ex-microsoft-employee-natal-will-fail/

There was a little more ire when I had the temerity to point out that non-Nintendo titles on the Wii fail to sell:

      http://www.gamestooge.com/2010/04/07/editorial-shut-up-fils-aime/

      and

      and

      http://www.gamestooge.com/2010/04/19/red-steel-2-50000-units-sold-in-two-weeks/

While I was attacked for saying these things, all of a sudden the Nintendo fanboys turn around when Iwata says the EXACT SAME THING a year later:

      http://www.gamestooge.com/2010/09/30/iwata-third-party-sales-need-improvement/

To Sean and all the other nay-sayers out there accusing Game Stooge of bias… I’m going to own up to it.

Yes. I am biased. I’m biased against corporate bullshit. It doesn’t matter to me who’s saying it, if it’s Tretton or Reggie or Steve Ballmer. It doesn’t matter. If they say it then I’ll write about it.

Think I haven’t been hard enough on somebody? E-mail me.

    65. Jonah Falcon Says:

      Jordan, remember when Sony claimed

The PS2 would have AOL? (Nope.)
The PS2 would have the power of 1000 PSOnes? (Nope.)
All PS3 games would be natively be in 1080p? (None of them are. All have to be upscaled to 1080p.)

Sony is fond of making promises it never keeps, just like Peter Molyneux.

    66. PP Says:

Hey, Jonah Falcon! Stop shouting your mouth off you idiot child. Upscaled to 1080p??? UPSCALED to 1080p? LMFAO – you don’t know how HD resolutions work, do you?

1080p IS native HD you moron – because there is no resolution higher than that. When people talk about UPSCALED HD they’re talking about 720p – the kind you find on last – gen formats such as DVD movies and Xbox 360 games.

Oh and for the record, there are plenty of PS3 titles that support a native 1080p resolution – Wipeout HD Fury, Resistance 2 and Gran Turismo 5 just to name a few.

    67. Jonah Falcon Says:

Hey, moron! Can you read? I just said Sony promised that all PS3 games would be natively 1080p – and none of them are. Not the ones you mentioned, either. Wipeout HD, in order to lock in the game at 60fps they fudge the resolution on the fly. The game fluctuates from 1280×1080 to 1920×1080 to lock in the framerate. The system upscales the graphics to full 1080P regardless, but it’s not native 1080p – and Resistance 2 is far from 1080p (Resistance 2 is at 720p) – and you’re going to claim an unreleased game that’s been delayed HOW many times is 1080p?

    68. wtfwtfwtf Says:

1 Million shipped to retailers means that 1 million were sold… When you see a ps3 in wal mart that wal mart bought that ps3 to sell for itself…

    69. Jonah Falcon Says:

And Walmart will be pleased if the CUSTOMERS don’t buy it? Shipped =! sold for a reason. Sitting on store shelves does nothing for Sony or Walmart.

    70. Jordan Says:

@wtfwtfwtf – The difference is that unsold stock can be returned to Sony. This is why the only number that counts is sold through to consumers.

    71. brettseeney Says:

You are quite a sh—y journalist, aren’t you? You remind me of “The Sun” or “Daily Mail” journalists, where you bend the truth so much to make some sort of “point”.

You clearly have bias against Sony, and as such you should not be a games journalist, because you’ll just make these sort of articles.

      Now then let’s break down this article;
Firstly, your use of “confirmation” in the second paragraph, instead of actually confirming something you instead linked to a twitter post asking SOMEONE ELSE to confirm something. You didn’t link to the actual confirmation and the link in the twitter post is to an IGN article about how many move units have been shipped, it also states that Sony are not commenting on how many have been sold.

The link in your 3rd Paragraph links to that same article, and quotes the text I mentioned above stating that they will not comment on how many sold, but now it mentions “Previous Analyst”, which turns out to be Michael Patcher. The article states how Michael Patcher ESTIMATES how many Move’s have been sold. And again you use this as evidence… not looking so strong an argument now is it.

Let’s carry on, the 3rd paragraph is word from Tretton this time however there is no link to where this was quoted from (?) but alas, Jack Tretton continues to be tight lipped about actual sales, so if non of the links you provided show actual sales confirmation, or show any word of sales (as opposed to shipped) then how can Jack Tretton lie about sales. Oh that’s right, he didn’t.

You should really leave game journalism to the people who can actually offer up a non biased, non bullshit ridden article full of facts and information… Just sayin’

[Blah blah blah ad hominem, strawman fallacy, blah blah blah. - Jonah Falcon]

    72. brettseeney Says:

@Jonah Falcon; in an attempt to save face you make a feeble attempt at belittling my post, which in turn makes you look like the biggest moron ever… bravo.

You act like an 11 year old, how on Earth did you get into games journalism?

Of course we all know why you’ve done this, because my post actually went through the topics and links to point out where your fecal matter of an article is wrong, this embarrassed you, so you tried your hand at wit, which has severely back fired.

You throw around “Ad Hominem” and “Strawman Fallacy” as if the article in question was of any worth. I’ve pointed out your article has no evidence and what not and is in fact just baseless conjecture, delete it, do yourself a favour and pretend this article never existed.

    73. Jonah Falcon Says:

Don’t you get it? You bore me. I’m not interested in carrying on this conversation because you keep insisting 2+2=5 and I have no interest anymore in what you have to say. It’s pure, unadulterated garbage.

    74. EDB Says:

Wow, this article was hit up by some Sony “plants” or something. There was a run a few screens up where about a dozen “different” people all said the same thing.

    75. brettseeney Says:

That’s complete and utter bullshit, if you had no interest you’d no longer reply to me full stop. Instead you have to try and pretend you have no interest anymore in order to save yourself further embarrassment.

I keep insisting 2 2=5? how? By pointing out your article has no basis and is just mindless fanboyish conjecture written by a moron?

If you’re going to dish a load of bullshit at least have the spine to face the music.

    76. Paul Says:

This could be the biggest article on the internet. Bravo!
