After eight long, tortured years, Star Wars: Galaxies is finally coming to a close, as Sony has announced that the MMO would be shuttering on December 15.
According to the official site, Sony and LucasArts, which has a new Star Wars-themed MMO on the way, Star Wars: The Old Republic, mutually agreed to terminate the game:
“We are extremely grateful to all of the SWG fans. We have had the rare opportunity to host one of the most dedicated and passionate online gaming communities and we truly appreciate the support we’ve received from each and every one of you over the course of the past eight years.”
“We’re going to end with a bang and we want the final chapter of the galaxy to be written in part by the dedicated and passionate SWG community. Details will be announced at a later date.”
Star Wars: Galaxies will undergo several phases of shutdown. Today, sales of 12, 6 and 3-month SWG subscriptions were terminated. On September 15th, both the MMO and the trading card version of the game will no longer be available for sale. On October 15, billing will be shut down.
In addition, Sony Online Entertainment is offering users with active subscriptions a free two month trial to Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, Everquest, Everquest II and DC Universe Online. The free trial would be active between October 15 and December 31.
By December 15, the last Rancor will be killed and the servers will be shut down permanently.
However, Sony promises to have the MMO end on a bang. During the MMO’s final week, the community will be invited to participate in “a galaxy-ending event.” According to the official release:
“We want the final chapter of the galaxy to be written in part by the dedicated and passionate SWG community. Details will be announced at a later date.”
