Vita Continues to Freefall

Week after week, the sales for the PSP Vita drop by a significant margin:
- Week 1 – 324,859
- Week 2 – 72,479 (-77.69% from previous week)
- Week 3 – 42,648 (-41.16% from previous week)
And now the latest week – 18,361 a drop of 56.95% from the week prior.
It’s still not clear what is happening in Japan. The Vita is being out-sold by a wide margin by the much less expensive Nintendo 3DS, but at the same time it’s also being outsold by the original PSP.
Sony isn’t reporting numbers for the 3G version and WiFi version individually so we can’t tell which side the problem is on. My suspicion is that the WiFi version sold out early on and a society as technological as Japan isn’t interested in yet another 3G device with yet another data plan. That would explain why retailers have greatly discounted the price on the 3G version but left the WiFi version alone.
So far Sony claims that “overall those numbers have been to forecast”.
Really? You forecast a 94% drop in sales over 4 weeks?
